But Devon Ruined everything! Spoiler Alert

I definitely liked the movie, but I don't get it. Devon ruined everything for Trent at the end. All those men wouldn't have come after him if it weren't for Devon. So what kind of friend was she really? At the end why does Devon try to help Trent if she's the one that caused all this commotion to begin with?

This is the way I interpreted it...

She didn't really know what she was doing, she was upset and shocked when she saw him kill the dog, so she came home crying, upset, shocked, the works, and they start asking her all these questions... I don't think she realized that they were gonna think what they thought, and if she did I don't think she cared, because was upset. It's really not fair that they just assumed he was the devil immediately. But when she saw how bad she had made things for him she had to stop it... which is partially why she shot the guy...

just sayin.

From the point of view of the townspeople it definitely looked like she had been abused so I can't really blame them for jumping to that conclusion, although they certainly shouldn't have gone and attacked him. She came home crying and said he had done something bad, they asked her if he touched her and where and she said yes, and told them he had touched her chest which is pretty damning, add to that the whole 'secret friends' thing... she helped him because he was her friend and I don't think she ever wanted him to get hurt, she was just upset and confused when she spoke to her parents and wouldn't have expected them to attack him (and when they did remember she also tried to direct them to the wrong place because she didn't want them going to his house).

I do agree that Devon probably had no idea what she was making them think- in the same way she didn't understand why they had to keep their friendship a secret. I liked the ending, it was sad that their frienship couldn't work out but it was such a peculiar one I'm not sure how it could have. Devon was very mature for her age but at the same time couldn't really understand why Trent killed the dog- she probably didn't understand the concept of putting it out of its misery.

I don't think the ending was all that bad for Trent though- remember earlier in the film she had asked him what he wanted to be 'when he grew up' and he said the only thing he wanted was to leave the town, and in the end he did.

But they didn't care a fig when Brett molested her, because he was part of the upstanding community. So I don't think their actions were even out of concern for Devon at all. The attack was on him and who he was, and Devon just gave them a convenient excuse.

I think Devon was so appalled and angry when Trent killed Tracker that she wanted someone to share in that anger and empathise with her. I don't believe she realised what her words could imply but just wanted to convey how p***ed off she was, doesn't she say something like "We were friends. Secret friends... but then he killed the dog!"?

They disliked Trent from the start. He was an unsavoury part of their community and they didn't want to acknowledge him as anything other than trailer trash (look how Pamela treated him when other people were around). The dismissal of Brett's molestation was because Brett was one of the 'inner circle' whereas Trent wasn't.

Be me, for a little while.
