I'm partially descended from a guy named Thomas Cable who got to Virginia from England in 1651, does anyone know if Selleck's character in this is also implicitly of old colonial stock or is it just an English surname?

It's based on a novel by Elmore Leonard and I can't find any evidence that Paul Cable was an historical person.
