Mystery Box

In several scenes near the end of the movie, Suzy Amis is wearing a long thin box on a strap over her shoulder. It is never used or explained. Does anyone know its purpose?

One scene I found odd was when the family first sights their ranch from a ridge. Tom looks at it through a collapsible telescope, then snaps it shut before handing it to Suzy so she can look, which means she has to open it again. Then she refuses to let her son use it for a closer look at what he can plainly see already. ???

The box holds the tubes of cartriges used to reload the Spencer carbine she carries. The Spencer reloaded through a trap in the butt stock.

That's very interesting. Thank you for the information.

FYI, the box is called the Blakeslee Quick Loader, and as stated above, contained tubes that held cartridges for the Spencer carbine and rifle, which could rapidly be poured into the integral tubular magazine in the buttstock.

Loud mouthed women have always existed.

That's funny; I don't remember her being loud-mouthed. She was grim and had issues with her husband, whom she thought was dead and then he surprisingly comes back from the war, but she wasn't "loud mouthed."

Besides, there have always been independent, strong-willed, outspoken women.
