Where did you find it on DVD? Thanks

reply

I bought it ages ago off Play.com
Just looked at Amazon and the price has shot up, play doesn't even have it.
If you like the film it may be worth getting the book, I have bought it but not read it yet.

are there any movies like this. Romance, not too much gory war, britain and preferably with a happy ending?

You should be able to find them with the Movie Keyword Analyzer - http://uk.imdb.com/keyword/romance/wwii/england/ which would be an excellent idea if people used the correct keywords on a film. As it is it recommends -

1. Waterloo Bridge (1940) 7.6/10
2. Ministry of Fear (1944) 7.2/10
3. Valiant (2005) 5.7/10
4. Pearl Harbor (2001) 5.3/10
5. Flying Fortress (1942) 4.9/10

the inclusion of Pearl Harbor is a joke - the others, I don't know.

Here's some good TV epics which do match the criteria -

The Camomile Lawn http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0103381/
Coming Home http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0158653/ (and perhaps the precursor Nancherrow http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0164112/ ?)
The Cazalets http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0283280/
Sword of Honour http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0273021/
A Dance to the Music of Time http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0118297/

they're all available on DVD.

I always liked John Schlesinger's Yanks (1979). It fulfils your criteria of romance (three of them, to be exact), not too much gory war (not a battle of any sort in this one), Britain (American GIs arriving in the north of England) and preferably with a happy ending (I think the ending is, at the very least, optimistic). And it also has a top cast - a young and likeable Richard Gere supported by class acts like Vanessa Redgrave, Rachel Roberts, Tony Melody, etc plus Sir Antony Sher in a tiny role. Have to laugh at IMDB's Keyword Analyzer though : WWI (???)/ 1940s/ Chamber Pot/ Condom/ England/ Fish And Chips.

Just another thought, if you liked this film, you might enjoy The Gathering Storm (2002). The scenery and cinematography are beautiful and you won't see better acting than this - Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave are superb as Winston and Clementine Churchill. The film tells of their enduring love while Churchill was the forgotten man of British political life in the lead up to World War II.

I really liked this film. The storyline was a little jerky at times, but you really cared about the characters and the scenery was lovely. It was a little slow to begin with, but after that it really takes hold of you. For me it was the love story betwen Stella and John that makes the film. The love story was so poignant and epic. For me, though, the very sad ending lets the film down. I like things to end happily and leave you all warm and fussy inside. But this left me sad and empty. The last scene was so beautiful, with Joe and Stella obviously still deeply in love and knowing they'll never feel this way about anyone else, but then, they have to part and it's so sad! I feel really sorry for Joe to, as he's effectively got the life he never wanted now.
Anyway i think they should have had a happier ending, with joe and stella living happily ever after. If it did i think i would say i really love this film, as it is, the ending is just too painful! They will have to live their lives apart, always knowing what they had and always wanting it, but never having it again. (well i reckon janet should run off with another man and leave joe so he can be with stella like he's supposed to!)
