What do you think of the ending (spolier obviously)

I thought the ending was sooo sad. It's a good film, but for me it was the love story between stella and joe that makes the film. The actors played it so well that i really cared about the characters and what happened to them. I really wanted a happy ending - i always like films to have happy endings!

I just thought it was so sad that Stella chose to marry philip instead. I know why she did - he was very badly injured after all, but it was still very sad! She didn't love philip (i don't think she ever really did) and she only really married him out of pity and the marriage didn't work out anyway with them getting a divorce.

And then at the very end, when we see Joe and Stella together. They still really love each other and know they always will, and well it's so sad that they can't be together, as now Joe is married with kids. So instead they have to part and always remember that they never did get what they want. Also Joe was always trying to escape his life on the farm, and it was so sad that he got what he didn't want - married to Janet and looking after the farm, following in the same footsteps of his father. And Stella could have saved him from this fate, and should have!

Also what she says at the very end - about not thinking she'd ever be happy again but that she was wrong, because there is always hope, and some things will always remain in the heart. What do you think she means my this? I'd like to think it's because there's still hope for her and Joe. And do you think she means she'll always love joe? The film ended far to abruptly after this for me, didn't give you time to take in what had happened and left me very frustrated and sad.

So well i didn't like the ending and it makes me so sad to think of it.
They should have been able to live happily ever after somehow - but they didn't and so it makes the film so painful and i'd have loved the film so much more if they'd had a happy ending.

So what do other people think of the ending?

In the book, she eventually after many years ends up with Joe, a far better ending than in the film

"Hinkel, ist du?"
