Who knows? Criterion released Touchstone's The Royal Tennenbaums. I hope so.

How much did you put out to get in?

After rewatching Kundun, I have to agree. Disney shafted this film on the original release.

Criterion needs to get its hands on Kundun, remaster the video, get Scorsese, Mathieson, Deakins, Schoonmaker, and other people to do commentary, isolated music track, an in-depth documentary/interview with Scorsese, Dante Ferretti's designs, deleted scenes, and the trailer.

Hopelessly in love with Uma Thurman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Emmy Rossum

Go to Criterionco.com or Criterion's MySpace site and request it. If they get enough requests they will start looking into it.

It really depends on whether they can get rights or not. I think that the Criterion Collection has a relationship with one of Disney's sister companies and since they've disowned the film, I doubt they would mind getting it of their DVD label as well. And then they can go to town and give it the best transfer possible with the best extras.

Hopefully they could do it in time for it's tenth anniversary which is a year away. But then the company has enough on their plate with their upcoming release of 'Berlin Alexanderplatz'.

Oh, wow, I hadn't heard about that "Berlin Alexanderplatz" release!! Thanks for that!! I have heard that they have a new, remastered re-release of Pasolini's "Salo" coming, as well as Jim Jarmusch's "Night on Earth", and I've heard they may be working on Cronenberg's "Crash",too (NOT the Oscar one, the OTHER, more interesting one).

But, yes, they'd be great for "Kundun". Just the way they were for "The Last Temptation of Christ", which Universal had no plans to release any time soon, and let the rights go pretty easily. Disney should do the same for "Kundun".

As for other Scorsese masterworks, it's strictly a rights issue. Labels like Sony, MGM/UA, Warner, and Universal simply didn't want to give up the rights to these titles because they planned big, special edition re-releases of their own for them.

Plus there is a feature length documentary on the making of this film, called "In Search of Kundun with Martin Scorsese", which is very hard to find or see. It would make a wonderful supplemental feature for a Criterion release of this beautiful, neglected film. Disney has always ignored it. Like I said, the way Universal didn't really want to re-release "Last Temptation", Disney, I'm sure, isn't doing anything special for this one either.

It would be perfect for Criterion.

There is also a rumor of a possible Eclipse release of the short films and docs. of Scorsese, though I have no confirmation of this whatsoever. It would be great though!

Well, it's been a while, but it seems "In Search of Kundun" is finally getting a US DVD release after all as a stand alone film. It will be released on September 9,2008.

Where'd you find that out?
