Could someone explain this?

At one point in the film, The Dalai Lama looks down at his feet he's wearing brown leather shoes and the camera focuses on it, later on when he meets Mao, the camera then focuses on Mao's shoes, he is wearing black leather shoes. I'm not sure what it means, could someone explain?

I think- maybe- it was to show that The Dalai Lama had an interest in more modern things than just cameras and telescopes. He had an avid curiousty which even extended to shoes.
