Has a dog Buddha-nature?

or not?

reply

> or not?

Theoretically, it can have a grain of that, and within 4 or 5 reincarnation maybe the dog can be reborn as a human being, that human being attaining enlightenment, then he can become a Buddha.

reply

Mu.

meow ?

reply

Yes but

To realize Zen one has to pass through the barrier of the patriarchs. Enlightenment always comes after the road of thinking is blocked. If you do not pass the barrier of the patriarchs or if your thinking road is not blocked, whatever you think, whatever you do, is like a tangling ghost. You may ask: What is a barrier of a patriarch? This one word, Mu, is it.

reply

No, it is not.

reply

lol, internet

reply

Well but it doesn't, since "Mu" means "nothing."

Has a Buddha dog-nature?

reply

This is not a question.

reply

To actual explain it in layman's terms: the dog has the potential to one day become a Buddha (''awakened one''), infact Gautama Buddha was a number of animals in his past lives including a monkey.

"Namu-myoho-renge-kyo"

reply

Indeed.
Every sentient being has buddha nature/ seed of enlightenment.

Think:
If a human being has buddha-dhatu/tathagata-garbha, how about:
- Neanderthal
- chimp
- dog
- rat
- fly
- protozoa
- monocyte
- bacterium
- virus
- fungus
- protein
??????

See?

reply

I see dead people.

reply

Yes and no

Yes = the senitent being can awaken to it's buddha nature
No = The buddha nature has not been awakened yet, hence still a sentient being

reply

I thought the answer has always been:

"Woof!"

reply

I once met a dog named Buddha.

Personally, I think dogs are a better class of people.

I'm sorry baby, I had to crash that Honda.
