I caught this on HBO tonight and now I know why I never bothered to rent it.
Anyway, "Kate" is trying to recall all these sounds and voices, but doesn't remember jumping into the river at a waterfall? The police hunt up and down a calm and serene stream with riverbanks, and she doesn't think to tell them she made a decision to jump 100 feet off a sheer cliff into a noisy waterfall?
Morgan must have fired that shot through Milk of Amnesia.
See what you said really doesn't do anything for me. 2 guys found her in a river, they were fisherman. She was drugged in that cell and was very weak and probably couldnt really hear anything that well or remember hearing anything. When she was in the hospital she was out so she probably forgot somethings. And when Freeman was asking her these questions and ended up panicking cause it brought her back to where Casanova nearly kills her. So it probably never occured to her to even mention any of these reasons i guess you would call it.

i agree, but that one sceen where she is giving her speech after she is all better, she mentions a thanks to the boys who fished her out of the river.
so obviousley everyone knew right then that she must have been near a river.
I don't think the waterfall itself is the issue -
a) She had been running, disoriented, through underbrush for several minutes before she got to the waterfall - they knew where she ended up; I think the ?? was how she got there in the 1st place -
b) Especially since both in the movie and the book, Kate insisted (accurately)that she was in a manmade structure with doors/walls, but no law enforcement could find any evidence of such a place after she escaped. "They missed it," she says, and she's right. You'd think they'd have figured out a way to find the underground lair sooner, but oh well.
thought the same thing - why not have the fisherman take them back to where she was found as a starting point for the search - especially since she only ran for a few minutes
