Question about Plot (spoiler, sort of)

I think I missed this -- I saw most of, not all of the film today. Why was her mother set on fire in the very beginning flashback? Was it just a random crime, or did it have some other reason? It was shocking, that's for sure. If any one can fill me in, I'd be super grateful!

We find out in the rest of the move that she grows up to have a fairly strange set of values. Not surprising if she had that childhood experience. A child would never know why that happened, so the audience is given a reason to empathize with her. Enough?

It's the husband setting his wife on fire in the first scene. Nikki as a child witnessed this and understandably affected her. At least in the credits ('in appearence order'), it appears that way.
