Amazing!

I had the opportunity to see this movie and I must say this is one great movie! This is how a movie should be done. Great story, great performances all the way through. Fedja van HuĂȘt showed great promise as a young man trying to get his and prove his worth in the world. And Jan Decleir as Dreverhaven simply stole the show. This is a quality movie (in my opinion), this is how a movie should be done.

I liked the movie as well, it was the second Dutch movie after "Turkish Delight" and I must say that the Dutch seem to have a very interesting fim culture.

The dialogues were brilliant and the colors in the movie simlpy beautifal

Actually, the Dutch film culture sucks, there are like three good Dutch films I've seen. Haven't seen Karakter yet...

reply

Its actors?? Jan Decleir is a Flemish Belgian. :) Also, most of the interesting Benelux movies seem to come out of the _be_ part. Just an observation.

You missed what is perhaps my favorite Dutch movie -- Antonia (Antonia's Line).

Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.

reply

Also, don't forget The Discovery of Heaven

reply

True... the movies you mention are good, but theyre all based on (older) Dutch literature....

Modern Dutch movies suck! (Think: Costa, Volle Maan, Ellis in Wonderland.. Even though I must say that some of them have a nice storyline, but then the actors spoil it.. besides the fact that theyre in DUTCH)

The list you named are all old literature that I know have to read and watch for secondary school.. Not too bad, not my fave though..

I am American (not a prude one either ;oD) but I love Dutch films! I have seen so many I can't even recall most of the names but by far Karakter was the best! I recommend it to many people as not only an excellent foreign film, but an excellent murder mystery film in general.

There was one Dutch film I saw in the late 80s or perhaps early 90s that was very odd and disturbing, and I can not recall for the life of me what it was called. All I (kind of) remember about the story is that there were three women who were strangers to one another and they one day came together and committed a bizarre, brutal crime. The women attacked a man in a clothing shop for no reason whatsoever, knocked him to the floor, and kicked him in the groin repeatedly until he died. I know this sounds bizarre, but I swear it's a REAL Dutch film. Anyone know what I'm talking about by that brief description?

Groetjes alles!

I also think the Dutch film culture sucks. I mean, there are a few good movies, and Karakter is definitely one of them, but most Dutch movies are terrible. Most of the Dutch movies are filled with sex and bad language, so there aren't many Dutch movies that are really worth watching.

reply

Obviously you haven't seen many Dutch movies. I'll mention a few (flemish belgian movies)that are worth watching:

Dief!
Alles moet weg
Kassablanka
Any way the wind blows
De zaak alzheimer
Daens
Iedereen beroemd
...

The list ca be made longer if you want.
Saying that our film culture sucks is easy and lame. No, we do not have the money to make Catwoman or Van Helsing, but for now i'm going to see that as a good thing.

I hope the dutch film industry will continue to make movies like tey have been doing the last 6-8 years!

reply

well....you're proving their point: you're mentioning Belgian movies only, and by definition Belgian movies are not Dutch movies. They only are Dutch spoken, but that's not the same thing. The cultural divide between Flemish Belgium and the Netherlands is increasingly widening, mostly to the advantage of the Flemish (I'm Dutch myself!).

Character is just an Excellent movie. Everything in it is unique. I just love it. Is the best movie I have ever seen so far. I wonder if somebody know other interesting movies like this one.

I just finished watching this film last night and I thought it was absolutely brilliant.

Foreign movies are so different from the light fare we get here in the states. I saw Wedding Crashers on Friday night at the $3 movie and Karakter at home on Sunday night what a difference a culture makes.

Don't get me wrong Wedding Crashers was okay (Vince Vaughn is the highlight) but it does not compare to Karakter. I realize that the genre of both films differ, but I am always intrigued by the way French and other foreign films are made.

This movie had me just sitting there afterwards looking at the screen. I loved this movie!

I'm really impressed by everything about this movie. It's a remarkable achievement and it reflects well on everyone involved with it in any way (and on Dutch films in general).

Watch the dutch movie SIMON. It's one of the best.

reply

[deleted]

I must agree, Simon is not just a good movie. It is great. Very good story and even better actors that make it a wonderful, happy and sad film that every Dutch, and non-Dutch person should see!

reply

To Herjabram: Why do you assume I've only seen a few movies from the Netherlands? I am actually from the Netherlands, so it's not like I don't know what I'm talking about.

There is nothing wrong with sex and some bad language, but you can also overdo it. And your comment about Americans being prude...probably, but since I am Dutch it has nothing to do with the way I see it.

Lijmen/het been is a good movie too, not superb, but you will keep watching. It is about a liar selling worthless stuff to honest people, and he is mentoring another young man to follow in his footsteps. However, they pull a huge scam and not only does their conscience start to bother them, they find themselves unable to even do something about it.
(It is even more shocking if you do not know dutch as you don't know what the title means :))

Hmm, Flodder, would you show a kid that movie? I mean, it contains two naked girls playing tennis and you really see everything??

reply

Jan Decleir (BELGIAN!!) is simply, together with Gerard Depardieu, the best actor of Europe.

Three recent Dutch films worth watching:

Leef!
De Tweeling (twin sisters)
Cloaca
Interview (moreover because it was shot in only 5 days).

The best of these is probably Cloaca. Exelent characters and I think most Americans who are interested in films more than the average Hollywood lover will like Cloaca.

Don`t forget about LEK (LEAK, in english)!
Best action movie we made.

Zijn er hier trouwens nog wel Engels-sprekenden of zullen we maar in het Nederlands verdergaan ;)

@ maarten: it is not polite to speak a non-english language on a international forum, in my opinion at least...

Anyway, a few great dutch films were not mentioned yet:

- Abel & De Noordelingen (both from director Alex van Warmerdam)
- De Lift (great thriller, much much better than the later "Down" )
- De Poolse Bruid
- Iris (with Monique van de Ven)
- Meisje met de rode haren
- Fanfare

And yes, we also have, like all countries, our "embarrassment" department, like:

- De gulle minnaar
- Donna Donna!!
- De Boezemvriend
etc etc
etc

I agree with you, I'm Dutch too.
I read the book about two years ago, and, though a bit boring because I hate long descriptive chapters, I liked it.
My dad bought the DVD a couple of months ago, and I just watched it (I didn't have any time sooner)

Now I've got chills all over my body. Superb movie! Great acting, wonderful music! I'd never seen Decleir in a movie before (though I like his son's acting) but it was brilliant!

My dad bought Iris the same day. I'd like to watch it soon. Seems quite interesting, especially because I'm a vet student myself.

reply

Ja graag. Not an English speaker, nor Dutch, but loved this film and am very fond of the Dutch language. Which, by the way, sounded really really beautiful in this movie. We zullen allemaal Nederlands spreken!

reply

It truly is, my favourite Dutch movie of all time. Just saw the 4k restoration in the theater today.
