Tim Allen's character gets a bad wrap in this movie

All he wants is a goddamn divorce and yet, he gets an unknown son foisted upon him and is guilted into accepting an unknown culture's traditions within 24 hours of being introduced to them and because he's a city guy, he's portrayed as the ignorant one, when it should have been the mother's fault for basically tricking Allen's character by only giving him half-explanations of the traditions of her newfound tribal culture and zero notice as to his apparent responsibilities.

YEAH, BITCH! MAGNETS!

I actually felt sorry for him for the same reasons. Through no fault of his own, he had no idea the kid even existed and suddenly he was expected to form an immediate bond, put his life on hold, and take this uncivilized kid back to the city with him. And when he balked, he's portrayed as a selfish jerk for not immediately jumping at the chance to rearrange his life at the drop of a hat.

Was there some reason why the mom couldn't have taken a sabbatical and brought the boy to the city?
