this is one of the greatest movies ever made

Does anyone agree with me on the this?

I think you're out of your mind. I was a bit interested in what might happen with this character and the town, but when the story got so boring that he had to sleep with Robin Tunney's character I turned it off. This film seemed like a cross between Doc Hollywood and Henry Fool, the latter being a far superior film.

I think that this film was worthwhile, but nothing compared to the original story or the first film version, "Smrt gospodina Goluze" (1982) from Yugoslavia. The Yugoslav version is really quite hillarious, but much of the humour is lost in translation.

- It is the exception that confirms the rule -

Interesting to read this. The story itself is quite clearly based on an Eastern European source transposed to the US where it makes no sense whatsoever. Incompetently directed by a rank amateur who spent 4 or 5 days with hundreds of extras filming the 'climactic' scene by the bridge but didn't leave time to shoot reverse shots so none of it could be used. The account of a village in the Catskills (it was shot in and around Fleischmann's, NY; the bridge is at Gilboa) is laughable without managing to be funny. Do these people have no idea what the US outside LA is like? Terrible performances by Robin Tunney and the supporting cast.

I agree also. I don't think any movie can be classified as THE greatest, but this movie is a real gem

Yes, it is very compelling. You feel like you are drawn into the movie and instantly feel for young Christian(Julian). I am sure there are those who feel that this movie was boring. Well, you can't please everyone. This movie was very interesting in that the whole town went from fearing this poor young man into instantly trying to exploit his intentions. It is kind of sick in a way, however, you want to see him live and do more good for the town. Of course, the mechanic left and the one woman become a baker because it seems they couldn't think for themselves, but, it just goes to show how conformity can be a hazardous thing.

Robin Tunney was indeed a beautiful person caught up in the web of her own delusions. It was heartbreaking to see Julian torn away from the only person that found beauty in him. I felt for him when he had no time to mourn for her. He was instantly coerced into joining her.

I would call this movie an instant classic. It is kind of like watching "What's Bothering Gilbert Grape" in the sense that you could watch this town and the characters for the rest of your life. I give this movie a two thumbs up. Christian outperforms anyone in this movie with great credibility.

I agree that it is one of the greatest movies ever made.

"What's Bothering Gilbert Grape" lol.

Well, it's hardly one of the greatest movies ever made. But it really does seem to be a bit underrated. Also it's nice to see Christian Slater in one of his rare watchable movies, because he really is a pretty good actor and could've done a lot better for himself I think.

IMDb says this movie grossed $33k......total. End of story.

An enterprising person compiled all of the "Cherry Jones" scenes (7 minutes of screen time) for all of the CJ fans to review (because we fans need to see all of the CJ archival footage in order to maintain our 'fan' status). This was posted to YouTube.

Yikes. Cherry Jones says naught for this entire role.(Well, she is a deaf woman.) Moreover, is yet another role where CJ is scrubbed down, dressed down.....no makeup. She is a housekeeper in her role, so that is understandable......but def no 'eye candy'......at all.

Also, nothing to hear. So.....nothing to look at, nothing to hear....except for the sight of CJ frowning, looking puzzled......shrugging her shoulders, writing things down on a scrap of paper for Christian Slater to look at.

In another scene, Cherry Jones brings Christian Slater a breakfast tray with one of those impossible-to-deal-with soft cooked eggs in an an ceramic egg cup.

Jeezis H Ch........after seeing this footage, I promise never to complain about how boring and worthless 'The Reader' was (except for the sex scenes, which were good.)

Actually this movie made close to 52 grand...

I did read some of the 'user comments'......slightly more interested in seeing this film than I was about 24 hours ago. Doubt that it is worth it though. I still cannot get over the box office receipts: $33k for one weekend and that is it? Poof?
