Such a good movie

I know a lot of people would find this movie boring but I really enjoyed it. To me it proves that Tarantino can make a movie that's not super violent/the stereotype everybody associates him with. I find it interesting that Elmore Leonard said that this is his favorite movie that's been made out of his books. Even over Get Shorty and Out of Sight!

Well I love this movie, not my Tarantino's favorite. But i disagree with you about the violence... It was still quiet violent. :/ I would agree that this is his "most soft" movie but the murder of Beaumont was cold blood.

Fifty, sixty years from now this one might be as revered as "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs" are now. The fact that it doesn't have the flash of those admittedly more accessible movies is probably why people include it among Tarantino's lesser fair. Time, though, I think will be kind to this one.

If nothing else, Robert Foster's performance is one for the ages.

Pulp Fiction is my favorite but I actually prefer Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained and The Hateful Hate. Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown are right after.

reply

I meant like a movie that doesn't have a very high body count, only 4 people get killed in this movie.

reply

I love this movie. It's a great story with good direction and an amazing cast.

This is a great movie...if somebody told me it bored them i would order some take out and make them rewatch it with me
Brilliant, perfect crime/drama/tragedy and the unrequited romantic tension...
None of the Tarantino flash and flourishes and attitude (which i love anyway) here...
It almost seems like a Fincher or Freidkin film
Agree 100%

Tarantino should adapt more Leonard. I'd love to see him do "Stick" justice.

reply

It's the last good movie Tarantino made.

reply

I love the 70's vibe that Tarantino created despite the fact the film takes place in the 90's. And yes while it is not a bloodbath like Reservoir Dogs is it is still quite violent.

reply

I loved it, especially the ending. R.I.P. Robert Forster.

Absolutely great tribute to Blaxploitation with the queen of the genre, and just a beautiful as ever.

To get what QT was going for here -- and he DID get it -- I'd recommend a watch of the Howard Hawks/John Wayne 1959 Western " Rio Bravo."

QT(and others) love that Western because in many ways it is NOT a Western. Rio Bravo has been called a "hang out movie" because it has quite a long running time(over 2 hours) and a lot of the scenes feature the stars (Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan, Ricky Nelson -- a guy for every age bracket) just "hanging out" -- joking with each other, SINGING with each other, looking out for each other, and the aimless talk becomes the point of the story.

QT also pointed out that a movie like "Rio Bravo" may have enjoyed initial success for a few weeks at movie theaters in 1959 -- but it is now immortal via DECADES of being available on broadcast TV, cable TV, VHS and DVD and streaming. You can always "hang out" with Rio Bravo.

And now...you can always "hang out" with Jackie Brown. Its initial 1997 run was a little disappointing after the flash of Pulp Fiction, but over the years, we've all had a chance to get into the slower laid-back rhythm of Jackie Brown and its wonderful look at "middle aged love" and middle-aged antagonists. (All the main characters less Bridget Fonda are middle aged.)

Jackie Brown stands out from all the other QT films likely because it had the "base" of an Elmore Leonard novel, but QT added his input by making Jackie black and moving the whole story from Florida to his hometown of Los Angeles(by the ocean but near middle class and black neighborhoods, too.) The LA setting connected it to Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction(they form a trilogy before Kill Bill shows up 6 six years after Jackie Brown), but it is its own middle-aged, Blaxploitation-nostalgia thing.

And Robert Forster is, wonderfully, the true star of the thing, all due respect to Ms. Grier, who is also great.

This movie is boring. It's boring to point of distraction, actually. But if you force yourself to pay attention, it's actually quite an interesting examination of thug life. It's impressively shot and very well acted, with lots of really long single takes with quite a bit of dialog. I think the production value is actually superior to Pulp Fiction. I didn't like the movie much when it came out, but the nostalgia factor, plus everybody being so young and fact that some of these actors are dead now actually adds a great deal of charm to the picture. What strikes me on this current rewatch i'm having his how well the lyrics in the songs QT selected actually reflect the scenes they're used with. He put a lot of thought into this movie.

I agree that it’s boring. It’s not a bad film, in fact it’s very good, but yeah, it drags.

Only boring people are bored.

I’m proud to bore the boring people that I bore.

It's still my favourite Tarrantino film and I like them all in one way or another.

I have never for a second found this film borin. I love the story, the characters, the soundtrack, the dialogue, all of which, prevent it from being boring.
