Meaning of Max's last line?

"Can you call me back in a half hour?" It's not like he chased after Jackie so what was the point?

reply

Maybe he loved Jackie so much that he couldn't act on it because of previous hurts. Then he realized he wouldn't see her anymore and went after her but went too slowly.

reply

I think you are exactly right. He realized that Jackie was probably his last chance for love and he was never going to see her again. That had to be a moment too profound, to just go back to work.

reply

That moment is so profound, that he walks away from the window with his back turned to the viewer (or someone who could walk into his office) and starts to cry.

reply

How do you know he starts to cry? He walked into his office, and the screen gets blurry but his back is to the camera. Never showed him crying.

reply

It's possible.

I don't know about the whole previous hurts thing, but Max was definitely in love with Jackie, but seemingly too straight laced to live her lifestyle. I think it was a classic case of, "I could spend the rest of my life with this person, if..."

Max loved her. And she loved him. And he had to break both her heart and his, because he just wasn't that guy. And he needed some time to compose himself.

Plus…he WAS inspired to quit, the night he watched Jackie Brown walk to his car and then went back to the sordid everyday catching bail jumpers.

He caught sight of a different life and the person he wants to spend that life with; but ironically, because he loves her, he has to stay there doing the same old thing.

Nicolette is one suspicious thought away from going back over the whole sequence of events. Cherry has to stick around and sacrifice happiness for love.

reply

He was scared of her.

has anyone read the novel? i wonder how it ends there
