Why did Max not go with Jackie at the end?

I realize that it isn't the kind of movie to have a happy ending like that, but was there any specific reason that Max didn't leave with Jackie at the end? Was he convinced it wouldn't work out and didn't want to ruin the brief time they had together? Or did he think he was too old to make something like that work?

I think after Jackie walked out when he got the phone call that he had second thoughts. He got off the phone, looked out the window and Jackie was speeding off in Ordells benz.

I think he also thought it was too soon to take their relationship to a new level by taking a trip far overseas and swiftly getting out of his comfort zone in that moment. I think if he spends enough time with himself he'll make plans to go out and find her or thinks she'll be back and the more they spend together, he'll be more prepared to take a trip with her. I've never gone on a trip with anybody I've only known for a week and prefer to give it a month or so before I'm up for a bigger adventure elsewhere.

I would like to think they eventually did become more than friends but Max is too smart to go with her right after it all goes down as it shows way too much possibility of collusion to the cops.

reply

Yes, I agree. The whole thing was far from cooled off yet.

I think it's because he realizes that he was part of her whole elaborate con. She knew he wouldn't come with her. He needed a moment to get over the fact that he was played too, even though he thought he was helping her do the playing.

How did she play him? Only thing bogus she did to him was take his gun without permission.

Just because someone does something good for you, that doesn't mean they're good for you.

reply

She played him by taking advantage of his feelings that he had for her and using those feelings to get him to help her plan the whole thing, considering all parties involved, and even help with the money grab personally. She knew he wouldn't come with her. He had too much feelings for her. He was so weak around her that he allowed himself to be an accomplice.

reply

She did take advantage of his feelings for her and the only reason she asked him to go with her is because he earned her respect. The criminal code he was entitled to some of the money and she wanted to share it with him.

I like to think they meant up again down the road.Really think he was scared of Jackie, being so vulnerable to her. She brought all this danger and excitement to his tired mundane life whats the next step? go sit on a beach reading a book? He was scared of her becoming boring and "normal"

reply

Jackie is from a different world and he knows she rather ruthlessly robbed Ordell and then set him up to get shot. Max says he is scared of her and in a sense it is true. Max is a relatively straight arrow bail bondsman while there is a touch of the Black Widow about Jackie.

"Chicken soup - with a *beep* straw."

reply

Yup! Max was attracted to Jackie, but had doubts that a relationship with her would be the best thing for him, or for her.

Yeah, he was ambivalent, struggling. I really loved his character throughout this film albeit at times he appeared too cool and composed to be real.

reply

Because she wasn't as innocent as he thought she was.
