Who was the narrator?

Just a curiosity. The voice sounds an aweful lot like Micheal Keaton. I'm usually pretty good about picking voices out, but wanted to see something official on this to put my mind as ease.

reply

Your right. The narrator was Micheal Keaten. He was just uncredited.

reply

I wonder why they didin't credit him. I watched the movie like 3 times in a row and i still couldn't pick up who the voice was. I had to come onto IMBD and look it up.

reply

I could have sworn the narrator was Joaquin Phoenix. Obviously I was wrong.

Yeah I thought it was Joaquin too.

This isn't the right thread, but starting a new one? Too much hassle.

I was wondering if the ending could be explained to me. I fell asleep when there were 15 minutes to go (not due to dull on-screen happenings, it was past 2am...). Oops.

Just all the who-ended-up-with-whos I guess. Thank you...

The boys' mother died - not sure how now I come to mention it, suicide? cancer? some other disease? - Pheonix marries Liv Tyler and they have 2 kids, naming the second after his mother, you don't see any of this, just told through voiceover at the end.

None of the other characters are given an ending really, although it's implied that maybe Crudup's character got the eldest Abbott pregnant while they were going out.

reply

Actually, Alice Abbott was pregnant from her ex-husband, Peter, not by Crudup's character. He only got with her after she was separated from her husband and already had the kid.

reply

yes, the first kid, but

--- below this line are spoilers ---

when the narrator shows all character you see Alice Abbott pregnant again. So is this child from JC or was it conceived when she and Peter got back together.

>>The boys' mother died - not sure how now I come to mention it, suicide? cancer? some other disease?<<

I don't think it was suicide because of Joaquin's line when he says something like, "She didn't even tell anyone" and he was talking about her as if she had been in the hospital for a little bit (a week maybe? I can't remember)-that seemed to imply she had some sort of terminal illness.

>>although it's implied that maybe Crudup's character got the eldest Abbott pregnant while they were going out.<<

How is that implied?

I think the mother had cancer, her coughing over Christmas was a foreshadowing of events.

reply

I think the mother had (lung) cancer too, especially because of the christmas scene.

reply

Half way through I thought for sure it was Arliss Howard. Don't think it sounds like Michael Keaton at all, but it was.

I think I'll have a large order of prognosis negative.

reply

It absolutely was not suicide. Remember when she was in the kitchen and she coughed? Doug asked her if she was alright and she brushed it off saying that she had a cold. That always means in films that the character is gonna die!

reply

Bugged me a little why they didn't just use Joaquin Phoenix. Would've made more sense. It's not the same as Wil Wheaton (?) and Richard Dreyfuss in Stand by Me, where one's an adult and ones a child; Doug was already almost an adult even in the flashbacks, so why not use the same actor so the voices are the same?

I guess I'd have to hear it again, I kept thinking it was Eric Close, but I was never certain. It sure sounded familiar and I wondered who it was as a backdrop to watching the whole movie.

reply

If the narrator was supposed to be Doug (Joaquin Pheonix) why would they use Michael Keaton?????????? Wasn't it Joaquin?

reply

I guess they used Keaton as narrator to give an older, more adult voice to the role. The narration is supposed to be looking back, in retrospect, with Joaquin (not sure how to spell) playing the young Doug.

reply

It still seems odd, given that Joaquin was in his early twenties on this movie, and therefore, already an adult anyway.

reply

Not odd at all, if the purpose was that, to give an adult voice
using the Joaquin's voice, the tone wouldn't have changed, if he was adult or not.

reply

It's a bit insulting to suggest that, even in his mid-20's, Joaquin still sounded like a child! Not true; he sounded then much as he does now - a perfectly respectable and believable adult!

reply

Joaquin was probably happy to let someone else narrate. According to director James Gray, he hates doing exposition. It's very difficult for him. He can cry on cue, but can't do narration without difficulty.

heh, i just watched the thing for the first time and thought it was keaton... tried to check the credits to make sure... nothing. this is the only place a can find that even mentions a narrator.

glad other people love movies as much as me.

reply

It is certainly Keaton. Shame they didnt use Joaquin really. Would have made more sense!

reply

I'm gonna say it's Michael Keaton on this one! It sounds so much like him

reply

I have an uncanny knack for picking out voices, even in commercials. It is absolutely Michael Keaton.

reply

I was confused the first time I watched this movie because from what was going on I could tell that it was supposed to be Joaquin's character, but I thought the voice sounded so much like Billy Crudup. And I kept getting confused thinking that Billy's character was narrating when I knew it was Joaquin's. It was a mess.

reply

whats the point of uncredited preformances

reply

I totally thought the same thing! Like I knew the narrator was supposed to be Doug but I kept thinking why is Billy Crudup narrating as the older voice... But towards the end of the movie I had distinguished that it wasn't Billy Crudup's voice but of someone that sounds like him.

reply

I was confused as well for the first 15-20 minutes. I knew it wasn't Joaquin's voice, so I imagined it was Billy Crudup talking, as his older self naturally. I find it weird that they din't let Joaquin narrate.

Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from.

reply

I've watched this movie many times and as I was watching it today, I noticed Michael Keaton's voice sounds a lot like Jake Weber's (Joe Dubois on Medium). I had forgotten it was Michael Keaton who narrated the movie so I came to IMDB looking for this info and it is indeed Keaton's voice, but they surely have very similar voices!

reply

It's supposed to be Joaquin talking,so i cant understand why they used Michael Keaton's voice instead of his own ?

reply

Michael Keaton's voice over is telling the story from an OLDER perspective and thus the need for a more mature voice. It makes perfect sense. To me, it would have almost been silly to use Joaquin's voice.
