The only scene where the time is shown: What's going on?

Engstrom enters Jon Holt's apartment and steals his date book. He sees that Holt has an appointment with someone named "Danielsen," and goes to the place to intercept him. When he arrives, the door is locked. Engstrom then checks his watch, which shows that it is ten minutes after eleven (11:10).

At first I assumed the place was locked because it was actually 11:10 at night, but now I'm not so sure. There were a lot of people walking about -- plus Holt did show up for the appointment; Engstrom sees him in the window of a passing bus.

So what I don't understand is this: Holt knows that Engstrom broke into his apartment -- he even warns him by telephone not to go there again. But he was the one who made the first move to visit Engstrom; the hotel clerk said that Holt had been there to see him. Yet when Engstrom catches up with him, Holt acts like he wants to be left alone and tries to avoid him. Why?

Theres at least two other scenes where the time is shown, both in Engstrom's hotel room.
