This is like watching an episode of Lovejoy

To those who criticize this charming little movie, what about the beautifully produced episode where he researches the materials, purchases them and paints the portrait with such lovely camera work showing the details of his efforts? Not to mention his altering the child's drawing into a master sketch. Perhaps only those who love art and the Dutch Golden Age elicit the enormous charm of this lovely little movie. Who cares if it's a "great" movie? I believe it to be a wonderful excursion into Lovejoy's domain. If you've ever watched any episodes of Lovejoy and enjoyed them for just the fun of it, you'll elicit the same delight from this film. There's also an amusing cameo of one of Lovejoy's character actors here. The British actor that played Tinker (Dudley Sutton) portrayed the bufoon art thief Halifax/Offul that was conned by the signed pub painting. All in all, what fun this film is.

I don't think it's really a "great movie" but I still watch it from time to time as some of the scenes, as well as the amazing score and it does raise some very interesting questions about art and the way we judge it. My favorite scene is when he's painting the Rembrandt. Just the intensity and the concentration of detail, not to mention the beautiful music .... I could watch that over and over again.

"Charming little movie" describes it best.
