Difficult film to watch

The family had a hard time dealing with their son for so many years. And when its a sad sort of "I told you so" feeling (which they obviously don't say).... they don't know quite how to bring comfort to him. They never approved of the lifestyle that ultimately led to his death or how to make it all better. They love him but how does one relate to one so different other than to be silent and present?
