Confused by time frame?

The movie opens with the 69th Academy Awards ceremony although one from a parallel universe. We know this because the graduating class is the Class of 1997. Anyway, at the time the Oscars were held in late March, where it would still be winter in the midwest; in fact, the midwest has some of the worst, bitter winters yet this Indiana small town has warm, sunny weather throughout. Furthermore, the film seems like it takes place over the course of a week or just a little over. The Oscars were held on Monday until 1999, then the wedding was supposed to be that weekend, and the fallout shortly thereafter. But then they suddenly have the high school graduation, which are usually held in June in most places, but there's no sense of passage of time.
