DVD?

Does anyone know when/if they are going to release this on DVD?

reply

It is available on DVD from both Japan and Germany. When I bought mine last year the Japanese one, which costs about $50, was the only option. I'm a huge Winterbottom fan and had to have it to complete my collection. It looks great, is widescreen and has 5.1 sound. The new German disc is much cheaper, but I know nothing about it. But since European DVDs are done in PAL, which speeds films up by 4%, which I find really annoying, I'm glad I have the Japanese disc. You can find the discs at amazon.co.jp and amazon.de

I wouldn't hold my breath for an American DVD, the studio that released it, Polygram, was bought out by Universal, and they haven't put much effort at all into releasing the old Polygram films.

thank you very much :)

do you want it just because rachel weisz is in it?

reply

I have a goal to watch/own all of her movies. So, yes.

There is just a VHS version of the film at amazon.co.uk but no DVD. I really do hate my luck, it is my favorite film and I am a collector of my favorite films' dvds... At amazon.com, on the otherhand, there isn't VHS version either.

Just received the German dvd in the mail today! :) Was worried it was only in German, because that's what it said on the site (amazon.de) but there is an English stereo-track. :D And it is in sweet anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen. Looks great, better than I expected. The sound isn't the most dynamic thing in the world, but good stereo-seperation and no hissing or anything like that. Nice and clear. And MY GOD, Rachel looks amazing. My most important DVD on my shelf, for sure. :)

I bet I know which scene you've watched most...

LOL, I'm pretty sure you do...

Hi, can you give me a link to buying the German version dvd? Also, how much was it delivered?
Thanks!

It cost me 24,20 EUR delivered, 11,20 EUR for the dvd, 13,00 EUR for shipping... But I live in Norway, so you might have to pay more, depends where you are. Here it is, in all it's glory: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0006IRJDW/qid=1139670867/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/303-0060443-4041053

I just bought a copy on ebay. It cost me £7.99.

I bought today the German DVD for 2 € (!!!!), from a DVD store in Helsinki. Luckily it has the english audio track, as it hasn't been released in UK, not to mention here in Finland. Funny they haven't released it in UK as the same disc as the german one, as it is released by Universal and has english and german audio track and german subtitles. And it's 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen.

This is my fave movie...I'm eventually going to have to relent and buy the German format I guess. But that means buying a new dvd player and all, since mine doesn't play the Euro format. Curses!

It's showing on Sundance Channel this month....just FYI

reply

i was able to catch it on sundance last night, and i gotta tell ya that it was superbly done both in writing and acting. gotta give it to my girl, rachel weiss -- brilliant as always. i do hope this channel continues to televise more underrated movies -- still looking out for "in my father's den". . .

I bought one years ago at a movie rental place and it was a US VHS. You may be able to find it at a vid rental and buy it from them or ebay it as VHS, too. I would almost just buy it on DVD as others here recommend. It's a great film, rather noir-esque and I'm a fan of Elvis so I support your cause ;) Good luck!

Would the Japanese DVD play on US DVD players? I don't know how to get this movie in a version that would play here.
