Ray's reaction when Barry was rough with Julie..

I am talking about the scene right after they dump the Ben into the water. Barry forces them to make a pact to never speak of the act again. When Julie hesitates, he grabs her by the throat and throws her against the car and intimidates her. All Ray does is get close to them and say: "Barry let her go!" Why doesn't he throw him off of her? He doesn't seem to be a very protective boyfriend.

Would you have responded different?

reply

Personally, I think Julie is rather annoying, so I didn't mind how Barry treated her. But Ray is the worst boyfriend for not sticking up for her. I guess he really just felt the same way as Barry and also wanted Julie to agree with the pact. How different from Barry who jumped into the water to get his girlfriend's crown (although one could argue he didn't want to leave behind any evidence).

You think someone deserves to be choked for being "annoying?"

It's a fictional character, so yeah, I don't really have a problem with it. And he didn't actually "choke" her, she had no difficulty breathing.

I think Julie was annoying, because she had the chance to go to the police for a year, but didn't. But still she felt she could judge the others and act like it didn't affect them at all. She was hypocritical.

It seems your morals are screwed up.

Says someone who passes judgement on some stranger on the internet based on just one comment about a fictional character on a movie message board. Chill out, social justice warrior.

and choking someone for wanting to own up to their mistake in order to protect your own ass is not just malice aforethought but also borderline sociopathic.

No, it's just a drunken teenager getting desperate because he's afraid he'll go to jail for murder.

Being "annoying" is still not a reason to assault someone

Please read. I didn't say that. I said that I'm not too bothered with Barry "choking" her, because I think she's a rather annoying character.

he assaulted her

He did not "choke" her, though.

Being drunk is no excuse for being malicious

But it doesn't make him a "sociopath". It was his own fault for getting drunk, but a lot of drunks can't really control their actions.

Which means you think it is alright to assault someone if they "annoy" you.

Good god, read again! I think Julie is a rather annoying fictional character, therefore I hardly care if someone manhandles her. That's TOTALLY different from believing that it's okay to hurt someone just because they're annoying.

He put his hands around her throat in an attempt to squeeze the breath out of her lungs.

Don't be so dramatic. He put his hands around her throat as a threatening move. Not good, but in no way "choking".

This is like blaming alcohol or drugs for a murderer's actions. It doesn't fly in real life. Barry being drunk is no excuse for his behavior.

Your reading or comprehension skills are truly lacking. I didn't excuse his behavior and I certainly didn't say alcohol can be used as an excuse. I said that instead of a "sociopath" (which is a personality disorder), he's an aggressive drunk (with emotional issues, no doubt).

Why are you crying over a fictional character in a fictional movie? There are real issues in this world.

reply

[deleted]

No, it isn't different. Justifications for bad behavior of fictional characters spill over into the real world (see Walter White).

That's ridiculous. I don't know Mr. White, but it's completely inappropriate for you to be making all these assumptions about my person.

And please READ again. I did NOT justify Barry's behavior, I simply disagreed with your classification of him as a sociopath.

You are the one ranting and raving like a madman.

*I* am raving and ranting like a madman? That's really grand. I made some offhand remark to another poster and you responded with a preachy rant making all kinds of personal assumptions about me. I asked you to chill and you just kept on going. All I've done is deny your accusations.

That's a typical straw man argument that has no bearing over this discussion

WHAT discussion, may I ask? All you've been doing is passing judgement over me and putting words in my mouth. This "discussion" is completely absurd. Take your crusade somewhere else.

All I said is that your morals must be screwed up and that you think it is okay to assault someone for being annoying, which is what your statement indicated

That's ALL you said? That's actually a very bold assumption to make about some stranger on the internet based on one remark. To think you can judge my morals is absolutely preachy. And no, I simply said Julie was rather annoying and therefore I wasn't bothered by the way Barry treated her. You applying that into reality is all on you.

You are still bitching

No, I'm telling you that you keep putting words in my mouth and making incorrect assumptions about me. You don't like it? Then don't do it.

You accused me of crying, but based on your overemotional posts

Overemotional? Hardly. Irritated? Yeah, because you keep putting words in my mouth and making incorrect personal assumptions about me. I don't know how else you expect me to react.

Again, posting a preachy rant accusing someone of their morals being screwed up simply because they made an offhand remark about not minding aggression being used against an fictional character, sounds very much like crying. Who cares what I think of Julie or that scene.

And are you also forgetting this is a slasher? A form of entertainment about people getting slaughtered? Doesn't that mean all people who enjoy this movie have screwed up morals?

Rebutting false accusations is not ranting. Obviously you don't know the definition of the word. Doesn't surprise me, since you keep misinterpreting everything I say.

Barry is clearly a psychopath. His behaviour is not that of a normal person. He has no guilt about killing someone just the consquences and hasn't a shred of empathy. He clealy sees other people as objects.
Why is there always some nutjob out to defend evil fictional characters?

reply

Why is there always some nutjob without a life getting upset over what other people say about fictional characters. Go cry somewhere else, you idiot.

I actually thought about this before, and you have to understand Ray's position. He was in no position to take a stand at that point. He could not have stopped Barry physically, he would have gotten beat down. He was also vulnerable as he was not rich like the other kids, so if he pissed off the others they could all have pinned it on him and he would not have gotten out of it (this is complicated by the fact that he was driving). And secretly he may have agreed with Barry's actions. At that point as he said they were all going down for manslaughter even though it was an accident (especially him as the driver with no high priced attorney). So he was in the position where they had to cover it up completely, or he was toast. So that is the reason why he and Julie eventually broke up I'm sure, but there was really very little he could have done there. I probably would have reacted the same way.

reply

How could he or they pin it on Ray when it was Barry's car that hit him? Plus Max was a witness that they were all together and the car was already smashed up. Sorry, not buying that angle.

reply

If they all claim Ray was driving and was the one who pressured them to dump the body. The person behind the wheel is the one who gets charged, not the owner of the car.

reply

I don't agree that it's always right, but yeah, the driver takes 99% of the blame in about 99% of the occurrences no matter who's car it was. The fact that Barry fell on him and distracted him in the car would not have been an acceptable excuse. And Max did not really witness anything, he saw the car cashed up after the fact but could not have had any idea who was driving and did not even know they hot someone. The witnesses at the beach party could have been in position to railroad Ray too, they seen Barry was drunk when leaving and then presumably seen Ray get in the driver's seat. So Barry maybe would have been nailed for underage drinking but that is all.

In all seriousness in a real situation if this happen today as bad as it sounds what probably would have happen is someone other then Ray would have called 911 with a cell phone after the accident, and when the police arrived all three others would have caved and gave the story that Ray was driving them home, driving too fast around a turn and ran someone over. This would especially be true if it were three rich kids and the driver was the one "commoner", as it was in the movie. It is too bad but most teens are not nearly as loyal to each other as they were in this film, making the cover-up and everything they did the next Summer admirable in some ways. Julie was clearly the most effected by it as she cut off from the rest of the group first and screwed up enough mentally that it effected her in college, but they all took a personal toll, nobody turned into the things they aspired to be when leaving high school.

reply

Even if Ray got beaten down, it would still be man enough to take a shot. Still, I do think Ray wanted Julie to agree to the pact as well.

reply

Barry owned Ray, thus Ray's wimpy retort.🐭

I agree. If Ray had actually tried to stop Barry at that moment he would have been tossed in the water himself. Ray was a lousy boyfriend and obviously intimated and afraid of Barry.

Julie was seriously annoying, but I don't think she deserved a choke hold.
