Start off I actually liked Helen and felt for her in the scene where she says she misses Julie. That being said she was almost out of the alley even if he was behind her why turn around? Keep running you're home free. Fool

Looking behind her, yeah maybe. But actually standing still and completely turning around? Just no. That's one of the few moments in the movie I've always hated.

Actually had she kept running he could have easily swung the hook out and gotten her as she ran by. Sure, he stepped out of the tires when she stopped to look behind her, but he was always ahead waiting for her. So frankly, the whole "why does she stop and turn around" complaint is pretty stupid. I never understood why this bothered anyone.

I think there was only one way out of the alley. He may have been aware of that since he had been stalking them, probably all year long.

Yes, she probably wouldn't have survived either way, but it's really just stupid how anyone would stop and turn around when safety was right ahead.
