Barry would have gotten off. They were white kids in North Carolina and Barry's parents obviously had money. And they might even had connections. Just look at real life s$%^ bag- Ethan Couch. Who just got a slap on the wrist for killing 4 people in a DUI accident.

That is true, plus it is unlikely any would have gotten and real jail time outside of 60 days or something even if they were not rich. Believe it or not a similar thing to this happen in my home town twice and the sentences were just a few months, and neither family was rich.
But in this case part of the story was that the families other then Ray did have money and could have gotten of criminally but were concerned about civil suits where the burden of proof is way less. Plus all those kids had big plans like playing football in college, going to NYC to become a actress, go to a big college, etc..... So even if they would have gotten off criminally and or civilly having that on the record and all the attention it would have caused for them coming from a small town it would have blown those plans for them.
