how is she in this?

actually, she´s farking godawful, like the rest of the overtly self-absorbed cast. couldn´t imagine this was going to be a two-hour-ride forty-five minutes into the movie. pretentious is the word.

reply

thats a bit harsh, come on you need to understand a lot about a person to know what they are feeling and going through at the time in their lives. we dont know what meg was feeling or going through or where she is in her life, spiritually or otherwise. what they all brought to their roles in that time in the past remains on DVD as viewers all we can do is get what we can from it what ever relates to you in life, we all just characters at the end of the day.
when you are at that level in a career like showbusiness , I couldnt really say I know, ive never been in that or known first hand anything like it. what its like to be a famous actress or actor in the world.. but what ever it is, im sure its unique like all other people living... watch the film for what it is, get what you get from it and move on to the next one. life is so fast at times its hard to just slow down and see whats really happening...

masked avenger
isnt the avenger masked anyway?

I thought good actor's/actress's skills require living the way the script tells them to. But the way you explaing things is the other way around - it's like cameraman following everyday's live of celebrity like Meg Ryan.

P.S. Please take a look at Cate Blanchett - she does acting the way it should be.

cate is a good actress! but she is no glenn close or merrel streap!
MEG is meg, the 80's romantic comedy queen!
MEg has given some great performances! you are only as good as the words on the paper also... even think the script was not really something for her!
she gave it a shot, its a role we are not used to seeing her in..
I dont think it was that bad! she has been type casted in certain roles!
so going out of the box might have made people think she cant act..
not true maybe just not as good as her other roles were! in better suited roles for her..

This is in my top 5 movies of all time. I personally thought Meg Ryan was the only weak point in this movie. Her character felt completely out of place. imho.

Man, I thought this was one of her best performances. When she's talking about Jack-in-the-box...it's so real. I also think her character made perfect sense within the context created by the other characters. They were all self-absorbed narcisists who abused drugs, women, themselves and each other...she was a pathetic character who had to rely on those men for "friendship." (she reminded me of a lot of girls I went to college with).

She was extremely realistic, in my opinion.

Brilliant film. The word "pretentious" is so over-used on these boards!

Agree. I thought she was good in this movie. Against her usual type. One of my favourite movies.

reply

I agree, but still....

Meg as dirty girl = hot.

Maybe it's because she's been typecast for so long that her character seems completely unbelievable. It's as though her previous roles are coloring her acting, not her acting ability. Either way, I couldn't see past it. It was like watching one of the kids from Dawson's Creek staring in a "dark" role to try to claim some acting cred. Either way, it's good to see people posting on this movie.

She was the worst part of a good movie. She was miscast to begin with and even taking that into account she was bad.

You're so right! I love Meg as dirty girl! I liked her in Promised Land which was her least sympathetic and yet highly believable performance.
I also liked her in Addicted To Love. She spoke of wanting to do grittier roles by the late 90s. There was a graphic sex scene shot for Proof of Life which was left out due to her affair with Russell Crowe.
What's interesting is that she turned down To Die For which of course Nicole Kidman did as if to show she could out Meg Meg. She did some nasty things with Jacquin Phoenix among others.

Thank you for that. I think Meg Ryan is all right. "Against the Ropes", however, was not so good, but here, it's good to see her do something besides her typical "Queen of Romantic Comedy" role.

reply

She limps along nicely.

I don't think she actually ever does any research before she takes on a role. She had no clue as to how someone on a drug bender would behave. She was very "one note" through the film and made no effort to really evolve into that character.

She was seen limping before she was even thrown out of the car- LOL!~~~ Major acting faux pas and totally took the believability out of the character.

She would have been eaten alive in my acting class. Awful effort, really shameful.
