I don't know if RR is a great actor or not. In this movie he plays a robotic saintly sleepwalker who shows no emotion or human qualities. In real life, he'd be the consummate bore. Even the scene where he tells her that he was married to a WOMAN in Chicago once, he retorted a remark of hers by saying, yes a WOMAN. What a loser...Gods gift to horses.

my favorites are Harlow and Garbo. I guess I'm just an old fashion guy

not a very scholarly response, if that's all you have to say, we2 -- have you seen any other Redford films? and, by the way, he has many more lines in this film, too. e.g. "I didn't love her cause it was right - I just loved her."

think you could do better? the phone book is full of people who think Redford just plays Redford.. A&E tried to remake 'Great Gatsby' - you'll find that DVD in the bottom of the 'one dollar' bin at Walmart.

He was too old for the part! At times you see his hands and they were so wrinkley. I'm not against the older man, far from it but he looked too old.

reply

I agree. He could have been Kristin Scott Thomas' character's father - ew. I hate when Hollywood casts an actor with a much younger romantic partner and then doesn't acknowledge the age difference. It's one thing if the story is about the age difference. But in this flick, it's not. We're supposed to watch this old, wrinkly guy suck the face of a much younger woman (who was no spring chicken herself) and think that it's fine and dandy. If they had just thrown in a line like, "God, I bet I could be your daddy's older brother," I would have been sort of okay with it. (And yes, I agree that Redford is a good movie star and director.)

What's with all the "old, wrinkly" remarks? You smug kids with your prepubescent skin and features and your superior attitude can kiss my wrinkled old ass.

You're right. Face it, Annie just dug "refined men" more. Her husband, played by Sam Neill, wasn't all that much younger himself. Nothing wrong with a May-November romance, regardless if it's woman-man or man-woman.

This is such a good movie. There is wisdom & a sense of intimacy in this film that is rare & as special as they can be in, well, in a movie.

I do think that Redford was particularly good in this role, but he was the director as well, and THAT is where Redford really hit the mark. And, by the way, he had a good book & a great screenplay to work with.

I saw this movie in the theater, saw how Redford stood in the grass staring at the horse, and became convinced that Redford himself had some special knowledge of horses. After seeing the movie, I read the book: Monty Roberts: The Man Who Listens to Horses, and found an amazing amount of practical knowledge about training horses from a man who taught himself by watching wild horses interact at night. I learned what I could from the book, then applied this knowledge several times with wild deer, and found that I could influence their behavior in amazing ways! After reading the book, I saw the movie again, and then was profoundly moved at how horses had, for centuries, been needlessly mistreated because of human ignorance. Monty Roberts is so good that Queen Elizabeth has had him demonstrate his techniques for her personally. This movie should be considered a classic because of the subject matter, which needs to be out there.

Agree with you on this point bodryn. Love that scene and Redford embodiment of Monty Roberts. I do think that Redford captures the essence of the American landscape in all his films and for that, I think he is a great actor and director. Watch the documentary "Buck" about the man who worked on this film and is the method that Redford used for this film. Horse handling is more than an art, it is a gift.
