This film is unwatchably bad

As soon as the gospel-singing sirens started wailing, I knew that this would be utter garbage. And I was right.

Hades as a Yiddish type just confirmed it.

The animation is crude to the point of outright ugliness.

This is worthless. Can't believe it was made during the Disney Renaissance era.

If it had been done with the sophisticated animation of Disney's top films, like Lion King, and if it had been told in a serious, epic manner, it would have been a masterpiece, coming from Disney at that time.

Instead, it's a disaster. One of Disney's worst, perhaps the very worst.

Ugh. I suffered through it to the end, just because I'm doing a complete Disney series, and it was every bit as awful as the opening promised it would be.

Very much a Donner Superman rip-off too, with Meg as a quasi-Lois Lane to farm-boy Hercules -- a dynamic that I never liked in either the Donner films or in the Smallville TV series.

Altogether, Meg was one of the most unappealing female characters in any Disney films.

If the movie had somehow involved Hercules with Aphrodite -- the one good female character in the film -- that would have been far more interesting.

The "celebrity" theme is supremely annoying. And the humour very, very forced.

The only good scene in the whole film was the date scene in the garden. Not enough to make up for an otherwise disappointing movie, with especially unappealing animation.

People keep calling this movie a "Superman rip-off", but you forget that it's actually the other way around: Superman has been described as a modern version of Hercules! Yeah, this version of Hercules is adopted by farmers, just like Clark Kent. And yeah, maybe this version of Megara has similarities to Lois Lane. But so what? The stories aren't identical! You could also call any Batman story a rip-off of Zorro, if you're going to be that picky.

Altogether, Meg was one of the most unappealing female characters in any Disney films.

I used to think so too, but remember that Megara has a back-story, which is why she became that way.

If the movie had somehow involved Hercules with Aphrodite -- the one good female character in the film -- that would have been far more interesting.

Aphrodite? Did she even speak one line in this movie? What makes her such a good character?

Intelligence and purity.

I believe the animation style was deliberately abstracted and stylized to remind of Ancient Greek artwork on vases, frescoes, mosaics etc. It is no coincidence that in the opening scene, the singing muses step out of a drawing on a vase. I found the artistic style very fitting, although the animation is a tad too hectic and jerky during fast-paced scenes imho.

What works in one medium doesn't work in another.

I too found the animation ugly and off-putting.

I'd agree with this. It's a good movie but not really a good adaption. The most suffering i had through this movie was seeing Hades turned into bad-attempting to be funny forced villain voiced by James Woods. Ugh shiver.

But overall i wouldn't say i suffered that much. In fact i rather enjoyed it.

And besides the original posting for this topic is laughably loaded with all the bad trappings of revisionist internet animation history. The minute i read him using terms like disney ren, acting like animation style matters and making rip-off arguments, it was obvious no one off the internet would take that **** seriously.

He's entitlted to his opinion, but it's really annoying when those types act like they are just paragons to quality, when there chief activity seems to be trolling the internet presenting their opinion as fact.

Gamefaqs has a far worse population than IMDB

I don't know what in the world you're talking about. I don't call myself any paragon to quality, whatever that means. I've been slowly doing a Disney series and going through all the films, one by one. I've praised many (mostly the older ones) and have been disappointed by many others (mostly the more recent ones). I'm simply posting my reactions. I'm not trolling anything or anyone.

I have no idea what arguments anyone has made before about this film, as I only recently watched it for the first time and ignored it and everything about it from the time it was released till now. If anyone has made similar criticisms before makes no difference to me.

And yes, animation style matters, at least to me, in that it affects my enjoyment of a film. I like some styles and dislike others. I disliked Hercules's style. That's a personal preference.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything in the original post. I've never been a fan of Disney but decided to catch up with their films now that I saw they are on Netflix, and this was a bad start. I almost gave up during the first song, but I endured it to the end.

There is absolutely nothing memorable or even likable, from the unfitting songs to the annoying attempts at humor. It even feels lazy at times, as in the conception of the titans (the four elements, really?!) and the ridiculous way that Hercules defeats them, not to mention turning Hades into a devil-like villain.

Also, I hated the stupid change to his origin. Being a demigod is a defining characteristic of Hercules, but Disney's executives probably freaked out at the idea of mentioning adultery in a children's movie.

This movie is bad. I agree with all the other negative comments in this thread. I never watched the later 90s animated flicks and im catching up now. The level of over the top cutesyness certainly sets a new bar. Nothing in this movie works. What a waste of great voice talents.

reply

Nothing works? You can dislike the film, that's fine. But c'mon, saying that nothing works in the film is crazy.

Disney animated movies always have some redeeming parts even if they're not that good as a whole.

The animation and design in this film is marvelous, as always. To call it "crude" and "ugly" is just idiotic and unappreciative of the amount of work that went into it. Just say it isn't your personal taste.

I disagree it's a bad film. It's my favorite Disney movie. I like everything about it. I don't find anything wrong with it.
