Why was she referred to as "Mrs. Brown"? They never married, right?

No where do I see an explanation for this. Is it something everyone called her, behind her back, since she was so close to John Brown?

reply

Yes, they called her that because she and Brown were close and believed to be lovers.

It was mean and outrageous, especially because Victoria was still in mourning for her husband. Lack of respect knows no bounds, not even with royalty.

There were rumours (unfounded, as far as anyone knows) that they were lovers, there were even rumour of a secret marriage. But although they were very close until Brown's death (there was no estrangement between them like the film implies), there is no evidence that brown was more than a loved and trusted servant.
