Ever noticed how much Kitano likes to knock himself off at the end of his movies? The only film of his that I've seen where he doesn't is Zatoichi, and that's a homage movie.

He doesn't in Kikujiro, but thats a completely different style of movie anyway!

Apparently, around the time of Sonatine (another suicide on the beach), Kitano was suffering from depression and was suicidal. I think that shows up a lot in his mid-90s work.
