Greatest Takeshi film yet ?

Simple question - Is this Beat Takeshi's greatest film as both actor and director ?

reply

I would certainly say it is and I think that that would be the general consensus. Of course some opinions may differ.

Most Recent film I've seen:
Land of the Dead (2005) by George Romero 6/10

Kikujiro is slightly better in my opinion and Kids Return and Sonatine both rival Hana-bi for second place.

Easliy his greatest work.

Yes, no doubt. The man is incredible!

sonatine baby

reply

Yes I have to agree. As an actor this is the only film where I believe he was great. As a director, its very hard but I think thats is his best. This is an outstanding film and to this day i still think of this as pratically my favourite film of all time.

<Takeshi Kitano is a genius>

Yes, I think it's definitely the best. As an actor the way he conveys this seething tension with barely a word in the first half is incredible, and the comic timing (automatic door in particular) is perfect. As a director, I thought the structure was also magnificent. Again, building the tension, with sudden violent releases, and holding back his motivation so carefully was very powerful. I don't think his other films, including the excellent Kikujiro, has this great combination with such a light director's touch.

It was a tough call between Sonatine and Hana-bi. The latter looks so much more sumptious & grand, with a wonderful storyline, superb cinematography and class acting by all concerned.

And yet for all that I preferred Sonatine (but then again Im biased and hence my handle). I loved Sonatine because of its slow-pace, its energy, style, story etc. Admittedly the production values don't come anyway close to Hana-bi but there's just something about Sonatine that really attracts me to it.

I can't decide. All his films are excellent. I do think "Scene By the Sea" is poetic and one of his best though he's not in it. Without a doubt, Beat Takeshi is an incredibly gifted director and actor.

reply

Damn close to it... though I would say Sonatine could take that title too!

I think its a lot to do with his point in life for each film, during Sonatine he was about to destroy himself and this really shows, whereas in Hana-Bi he appears to have a lot more peace with himself and also a lot more confident, and again this is very much reflected in the film.

It's definitely a bit of a toin coss between the two! So I say both! :)

not only is this one of kitanos best...it is one of the best movies(asian or not) of all time...flawless

DOLLS baby! DOLLS!

But I guess he wasn't acting in that movie, so maybe that's not what you're talking about. But as a director, I think he reached his pinnacle with Dolls. Kikujiro, I would say, is 2nd best in my book. And Hana-bi is a verrrry close 3rd. It's hard to judge, because they're all so damn good.

I'd say so personally, although I have only just watched it and with Kitano films I normally have to let the impression of them sink it a bit.

I've previously seen 'Violent Cop', 'Boiling Point', 'Sonatine', 'Brother', 'Zatoichi' and some of 'Kikujiro' (oh, and 'Battle Royale' in which he acted). But 'Hana-Bi' really does sum up a wonderful director/actors style and I feel it is his most profound work that i've seen, it's one of those films (as he is a director) that reminds me why I love cinema.

I only know Sonatine, Hanabi, Brother and Zatoichi, concerning movies the master himself directed. Out of these I'd have to pick Sonatine though, simply for matters of personal taste.

Sonatine. The scene with the games on the beach is just amazing. I liked Sonatine's soundtrack better than Hana-Bi's as well (even though this really depends on what Joe Hisaishi comes up with).

reply

Although I really enjoyed Kid's return and Doll's I would say that my favorite is Kikujiro....

reply

Yes, it is. Dolls is a close second. Kikujiro is actually a little overrated (at least on imdb). Kikujiro is way too long. Especially the return journey drags really badly.
