Watched this again the other day after many years....

After watching Spring Breakers I had to remind myself that Korine really is a good film maker so I did a re-watch of Gummo.

Not much a point to make other than to say that this was even better the second time through. It does take a certain skill to make the viewer feel emotions and even some sympathy for cat killing sociopaths but that is exactly what this movie does.

The worst offense that Spring Breakers had on my senses was that it was completely boring and sophomoric at best. I didn't know who any of the actors were, except Franco, so them being in it did nothing for me. Any four random hot girls would have had the same minimal impact.

Gummo on the other hand had soul and was quite carefully crafted. I am a cat owner who watched this movie with my cat as nobody else was all that interested when I told them about the graphic nature of the violence towards felines. None of the violence was real so it didn't bother me in the least.

And how was the response of your cat?

I agree with the OP. This film is multi layered and requires additional viewings to truly appreciate the nihilistic thematic concerns it explores. It is at the same time, disturbing, fascinating and makes the viewer question human nature in extreme circumstances.

Spring breakers.... I mean... WTF was that s***??? I guess Harmony needed to pay the bills - or was desperate to simply add another feature to his CV in attempt to get ahead? Either way, such a choice is more disappointing than what any naysayer may say about "Gummo".

Cats don't give a flying *beep* If those cats were all of your cats siblings, and your cat could talk, it would say "turn them into feline stir fry for all I care, I don't give a *beep* about them ho's".

I do agree, except about Spring Breakers. I think it will have much longevity and turn out to be quite a durable film. The film is a thinly disguised satire on today's popular culture, marketed to appeal to the very people it's about, by casting teen idol's in away to get through to the youth culture it attempts to parodize. Now that's genius in my opinion. Not to mention, it's a very sensory and visual experience, which Korine is always great at, but certainly comes into full swing with Spring Breakers.

I do love Gummo, but it's a very different film to SB. SB is a glossy mediation on today's hyper-masculine, hyper-violent, over-stylised, over-visualised, over-dramatized and image obsessed world, while Gummo was a unique, soul-searing slice of life about impoverished life in Middle America.
