Why did you decide to watch Gummo?

We carry it where I work (Hollywood Video) and a fellow Shift Director and I were talking about the wierdest movies we have, and this topped the list!

I don't think I would have ever rented it, even though we get movies for free, but it was on IFC tonight, so I'm recording it now to watch this weekend.

So that's my excuse, what's yours?

I also saw it on IFC a few nights ago and decided to rent it because I saw little snippets of it in the background of the movie "Belly" with DMX, Nas and all the rappers. I also remember a friend telling me it was a cool movie like a couple of years after it came out, but I just couldn't believe him judging from my initial reaction to the previews. I took me this long to finally come around and see it. I have to rank it on my top ten list of wierdest movies ever made. I really don't understand the artitstic intentions of the movie myself, but it had me midly intrigued throughout the course of the movie just because I wanted to see where the hell it was going and what point they were trying to make. At any rate it all turned out to be quite anti-climatic.

Back in January, someone on one of the boards was talking about disturbing movies, and this one came up. The poster mentioned that it involved killing cats and having sex with retarded people. I went to the page for the movie, and realized it was directed by Harmony Korine, who I only knew as the writer or Kids. I then looked up Gummo on wikipedia to read more. It caught my interest when they mentioned that many people walked out of the movie during the cat drowning sequence.

I was slightly turned off by that, because I love cats. I still looked for the movie on youtube anyway, and sure enough I found it. I watched the whole thing that night back in January. The first time I saw it I wasn't too crazy about it, but I liked it much more the second time I watched it in March. After finding it on DVD at a discount store, I watch it at least once every other month now.

I wasn't as disturbed by the cat killing as I thought I would be. Something about killing animals disturbs me, just like when kids die in movies. Still, I didn't think the cat killing in Gummo was as bad as some people make it out to be.

Same here. I saw it in the background in a scene in 'Belly', also a band I dig (Agents of Oblivion) interlaced samples into a few songs.

Some indie mother *beep* said it was an interesting movie. it is, but its also pointless, silly and over-the-top. waste of time............

reply

don't hate on indie film lovers because we like something you don't. if you have something constructive to say, or want to say you didn't enjoy the film then have at it, but don't insult all of us gummo lovers by calling it silly, over the top and a waste of time.
p.s. i'm sure you enjoyed the war of the worlds remake, it takes no thought and reinforces everything that stupid close minded americans love!

reply

i highly agree

way to make yourself sound stupid. you didnt even understand what the guy wrote. dumbass. learn to read.

What were the reactions in the theater like? I hear that a lot of people walked out after certain scenes during the film festival screenings.

I read.

Because I heard there were bands I liked on the soundtrack. Such as Bathory, Bethlehem, Burzum, Absu, Spazz, Brujeria, and Nifelheim. I thought the movie was very bizarre.

I was browsing around my local Movie Gallery for a movie to rent. After walking by the "G" section, I saw the cover which attracted me for some reason. After seeing "From the creator of Kids" on the front of the case, I thought that I want to see this film because I absolutely liked Kids.

When I got home and watched it, I was disgusted, disturbed and absolutely hated the film. Eventually I got into a period where I researched Korine and went back to rent the film again. After a few viewings I began to see the artistic beauty of the film.

It now rests in my DVD Collection along with Julien Donkey-Boy

Thanks for giving it a chance!

i decided to watch Gummo for the exact reason as FrankBooth_DeLarge. But i didnt like it, I dont know why. Maybe i just dont understand it. i have seen it 2 times, and the funny thing is, i always thought i was bored, but when i think about it: i wasnt. otherwise i would turn it off and never watch it again.. anyways, for me the coolest scene was, when those two bold guys were fighting over shoes.

PS: sorry for my grammar
