This movie sucks

This is a really bad movie. I see no merit in it and I can't hear half of what they say.

It's actually very good for an Independent Film. If you can't hear or understand half of what they are saying then you need to rent yourself a better copy of the movie.

I don't know what independents you're comparing this to but clearly you haven't seen enough quality films.

And as for the sound - they need to mumble less and maybe do a bit of ADR. Perhaps a little oil to shut up the horrible screen door would help as well.

I think this movie is damaging to the image of independent film. I hope no one chooses this as their introduction to independents.

I could not disagree more, man. Grind is one of my all-time favorite Independent films. The story, the acting and the direction are all superb. Especially good are Billy Crudup and Paul Schulze, who make up for the fact that they don't look like brothers through exceptional acting.

For your information Jeffrey Lyons said "extremely powerful and well acted".

The New York Times said "this gritty gem is loaded with so many emotional twists and turns that it will leave you breathlessly trying to keep pace".

The New York Post said "a fine cast...Crudup is bound for stardom. Schulze is fabulous".

The L.A. Times said "wonderful! Shelley, Schulze and smoldering newcomer Crudup are terrific".

I rest my case.

I don't know what New York Times review you're reading, but the one I can find says:

"Mr. Crudup, who completed ''Grind'' well before his recent Hollywood film ''Inventing the Abbotts,'' is far too refined to be convincing as a restless, hormonally driven grease monkey, and Ms. Shelley's Janey is a mopey dishrag who never breaks out of what seems to be a perpetual sulk. The drama huffs and puffs its way to a hysterically overwrought climax in which Eddie is forced to suck on a loaded gun.

By this time, what began as a mournful clear-eyed picture of quietly desperate blue-collar lives has degenerated into a clanking, macho soap opera."

I love Billy Crudup. Normally he chooses brilliant roles. However, to reiterate my original sentiment, this movie sucks.

I rest my case (case apparently only meaning citing quotations from the back of the dvd rather than making any argument of one's own...)

I completely agree with the OP. Total waste of time.

I disagree, I think this movie was brilliance. Well acted and maybe not as thought provoking as most independent films, it was still enjoyable because it depicted real life. Any movie to me that skips the fantasy elements or just seems like a typical fun fare "movie" I am sold in what a movie like this tries to capture!

I guess critics have seen enough of the macho soap opera *beep* that comes in the mainstream of movies.......I mean they're right in the sense that they've been done to death and even tho this movie has a lot of those elements, they still seem to overlook the acting and the realism of the world or some of the worlds we're thrown into.

My favorite was towards the end....you'll know when you see it!

The acting was okay. The story was stale and predictable.
