Psychoanalytical fairytales

Hi

I'm looking for quality film adaptations of fairy tales that have psychoanalytical undertones. Aside from this one, others that come to mind are Neil Jordan's THE COMPANY OF WOLVES and David Kaplan's LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD.

Anyone got other suggestions?

There's actually a French erotica film from the '70's called "La Bete" which was a twist on Beauty and the Beast and I think there was a much darker interpretation of it in Germany around that time too, but I haven't seen it.
Also, book-wise, "The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty" by Anne Rice is highly suggested because it's heavily sexual and very violent at times from that point of view.

Oh yes, I've been wanting to watch Walerian Borowczyk's LA BÊTE for ages! Good pick. As for German films from the 70's can't think of any. In the 20's Expressionist era, psychoanalysis was a major theme, but not in fairy tales, as far as I know.

Thanks for the suggestions ;)

I don't know exactly what you mean by "psychoanalytical undertones" but The Brothers Grimm may be interesting to consider. I think the movie raised many cultural and social issues about the time period of the fairy tales.

Sort of like Snow White: A Tale of Terror. It's not the main point of the movie but an undercurrent.

The old French version of "La Belle e La Bete" with Jean Marais has some psychoanalytical symbolism, at least according to Roger Ebert.

As far as I remember, Donkey Skin (French Film from the 70s) has psychoanalytical overtones (a king who wants to marry his own daughter). Quality filmmaking, I don't know. ;-)
