Cheap TV production ?

Is this a TV production? It looks like one...

Yup. It says it was nominated for an Emmy and it would explain the lack of any real gore.

Is it cheap-looking though? Is the production quality cheap looking? I know it's made for tv..but does it look made for tv?

Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.

Nope. I was actually surprised by the beauty of the costumes, makeup and some of sets. Also, an amazing performance by Weaver and a beautiful Monica Keena as Snow White.

If you're referring to the trailer, I think it makes the film seem much cheaper than it actually looks. I think the production value is great and better than what I would expect from a TV movie, especially back in 1997. It seems that it may have been shown in theaters in other countries, which makes me wonder if it was originally meant to be released theatrically in the US but got bumped. Perhaps someone else knows the answer to this question?

It is originally a TV film, but whilst watching it, you kind of forget that it is one because first of all the writing is pretty damn good, second the direction is also wonderful and third it has a great cast. I wouldn't really call it cheap, though, 'cause a cheap TV production set in the Medieval period would include costumes that look like they were bought as Robin Hood/Maid Marion Halloween costumes for kids. The setting and costume looks pretty realistic, much so that you can actually see people's breath to show how cold the setting is.

No this was definetly not a "cheap" tv movie. otherwise you wouldn't have people like weaver or sam niel in this. the actual snow white was clearly an unknown, monica keena, who ive only ever seen elsewhere in freddy vs Jason which is hilariously bad. but she will always be one of the cutest snow white actresses, very beautiful.

the only time it starts looking a bit tvish is when there are any sort of special effects especially the end with the mirror. beyond that, it looks pretty movie quality. I just bought it on dvd recently after haveing not seen it in years, great movie.

I think it is one of the best Snow White movies. And one of the better fairytale movies.

The quility of this movie reminds me a bit of the on Cinderella based movie ''Ever After''(1998) which was not a TV production.

This film was originally intended for theatrical release under the title 'Snow White in the Black Forest'.
Then studio changed their mind and released on Showtime in the U.S. (it was shown in the theaters in some of the countries, though) as 'Snow White - A tale of terror' in very censored version. Some of the cool scenes can be seen in the original trailer.

I remember Sigourney Weaver saying she had no idea it will end up on TV.
