Ellen...NOOOOOOO!!!+shy;

I like Ellen DeGeneres. Not necessarily always as a comedienne(tho she's pleasantly funny and ALWAYS has been,unlike another lesbian comic who once had a talk show herself),but as the person she seems to be and also her ability to mine comedic devices. In fact,I'd give just about any movie or tv show a chance when she's in it. It doesn't mean I will like it just because she's in it(I don't recall even finishing "The Love Letter"!),but sometimes she can help it(example:"Edtv"). However even she can't save this convoluted,cynical, unlikeable,thinks-it 's-much-more-clever- than-it-actually-is film noir. To be sure,I think nobody could make this film likable without doing a rewrite.
I feel like this was basically a bad career move for all involved. Why I single out Ms.DeGeneres is because I found her to be absolutely wrong for the part of a cynical detective. Not that I would recommend any actress(or actor)to be in this film,but this part seems more written for a hard-bitten,edgier character actress,say Linda Fiorentino or Anne Heche.
I realize that actors have the prerogative to play against type,I only wish Ms.DeGeners had tried her hand a better written,les self-satisfied piece of dreck like this film. MHO.

I love her role in this movie,and I think she's a perfect Rita Pompano.
I admit,I'm an Ellen DeGeneres fan,so I may be biased,but I thaught she was great in this.
It's so out of the character we usually see her playing (which is usually something like herself) whereas this character couldnt be more different.
I found this fascinating bacause of it.
Cynical and bitter and twisted amazed me cos it was so "out of character" so you concentrate on the character and not just go "hey look it's Ellen acting Ellen-y again".
But Rita Pomano realy amused me with her unusual dark humour,and I have to say,I enjoyed the film a lot more because of this jaded character, because, to be honest,the first say twenty minutes of this film is slow and "get to the point" ey.But The last hour,I thaught was fab- punchy one liners, character reactions.Crazed situations...cool.
Was I the only person who enjoyed this movie? Cos I've seen it over ten times now,and I still ain't bored of it.

What I learn most here, at IMDb, is how very much lots of other people disagree with my taste in films. That's interesting, though I don't know that it helps me any. ----- I do agree with the 2nd comment above but not the 1st. I thought that Ellen DeGeneres was PERFECT for the cynical cop role, and I'm not a particular Ellen DeGeneres fan. ----- It was illuminating reading that Ellen passed on that the ending changed after audience testing and how so. The flick sure seemed to shift dramatically for just the last scene and then end very abruptly after such a fluffy scene. I wouldn't have been surprised by a similarly sudden ending if Ellen had been killed but the current ending sure seems knocked off in comparison to the whole rest of the film. (I thought the film in general was just ok but not terrible

I suppose that I was mostly prejudiced against the film itself,it was just that I wasn't used to her playing that kind of character. That was,of course,her prerogative.
I enjoy her talk show and have gotten a kick out of her talk show. I suppose I could be considered a fan.

Ellen D. I can take or leave but Rita Pompano was the best thing about this movie.

And Ellen made her that way.
