I highly doubt that you know anything about it and are just spouting off because if he really is a genius it makes you feel inferior. Juvenile!!

All you have to do is a simple internet search and you'll find a number of articles citing this. Now if you are the type who doubts everything and thinks the 1969 Moon landing was faked then you just won't believe what you won't believe.

Wow. I don't even know what to say. You REALLY want the whole "Matt Damon is a genius" thing to be true don't you lol

reply

i highly doubt it

I always wonder how they get these IQ numbers for celebrities. It's not like it's in their press info: "When Gwyneth Paltrow was in the third grade, the school decided to 'track' her..."

reply

Unfortunately the article doesn't go into "how and where" the IQs were measured but here is one article which cites Damon and several others. Of course doubters will always doubt. But I've always heard "if you read it on the internet then it has to be accurate."

Reported by WHOM? lol

His AGENT? lol

Lay off the cool aid. He's an actor who had a LOT of help putting this script into a respectable story.

He's not a genius, and he did NOT write this independent from professional assistance.

As the saying goes.. he IS trying to SELL you something. The idea that these two wrote this story without help IS part of the sales pitch of the film.

Don't believe everything Hollywood tells you.

Matt and Ben Affleck both wrote it.

They wrote the script with the two of them in mind for the roles...and they each won an Oscar for best screen play...so guess they knew what they were doing??? They talk about living in L.A.working on the script, living in a rat infested apartment with some other guys...so no, they were not of the rich, privilege upbringings...they both had divorced parents at a young age, and were raised by single moms...they took their moms at their dates for that Oscar ceremony..and thoroughly thanked them...good boys.

They were not private-school educated. They both attended Cambridge Rindge & Latin, which is the public high school in Cambridge, MA. Damon did go to Harvard for a couple of years, but Affleck went to UVM for only a couple of semesters.

“I would love to say that I wrote (Good Will Hunting). Here is the truth. In my obit it will say that I wrote it. People don't want to think those two cute guys wrote it. What happened was, they had the script. It was their script. They gave it to Rob [Reiner] to read, and there was a great deal of stuff in the script dealing with the F.B.I. trying to use Matt Damon for spy work because he was so brilliant in math. Rob said, "Get rid of it." They then sent them in to see me for a day - I met with them in New York - and all I said to them was, "Rob's right. Get rid of the F.B.I. stuff. Go with the family, go with Boston, go with all that wonderful stuff." And they did. I think people refuse to admit it because their careers have been so far from writing, and I think it's too bad. I'll tell you who wrote a marvelous script once, Sylvester Stallone. Rocky's a marvelous script. God, read it, it's wonderful. It's just got marvelous stuff. And then he stopped suddenly because it's easier being a movie star and making all that money than going in your pit and writing a script. But I did not write [Good Will Hunting], alas. I would not have written the "It's not your fault" scene. I'm going to assume that 148 percent of the people in this room have seen a therapist. I certainly have, for a long time. Hollywood always has this idea that it's this shrink with only one patient. I mean, that scene with Robin Williams gushing and Matt Damon and they're hugging, "It's not your fault, it's not your fault." I thought, Oh God, Freud is so agonized over this scene. But Hollywood tends to do that with therapists.

SOOOOO, YES, BEN AND MATT WROTE IT. TO ACT AS IF COLLABORATING ON A FINAL SCRIPT IS SOME SORT OF JUSTIFICATION FOR DISQUALIFYING THEM FROM ANY CREDIT IS JUST IDIOTIC. IT ALSO MAKES IT VERY CLEAR THAT THE FOLKS BELOW ARENT VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE INDUSTRY.

Yes, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote the screenplay. These two really need to get back to the page someday. Good Will Hunting is one of the greatest films of all time, and the screenplay has a lot to do with it.

reply

This movie was weak as *beep* , actually the most overrated movie that year . Even though Matt's acting was solid he peaked with Tom Ripley and that's pretty much his whole career since then.

But this movie was a boring stink.

reply

Affleck has written Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Live By Night since Good Will Hunting

reply

Kevin Smith is a REAL writer. He co-produced this film.

If you read the original script its nowhere near the quality of the produced film.

I strongly suspect Kevin Smith's writing talent had a LOT to do with this script.

If you watch (or better yet READ) Kevin Smith's film CLERKS .. you will see a LOT of overlap.

Clerks overlaps a LOT with GWH sorry to say. So, I strongly suspect Kevin Smith got his hands quite dirty writing this film too. Don't think for a second Damon or Affleck wrote this alone. The fact that they haven't written anything even REMOTELY close to this quality since 1997 is telling...

reply

Kevin Smith has also never wrote anything close to this quality so that point doesn't actually make sense.

Here is a quote stating that Ben and Matt wrote it from William Goldman, one of the people who people like you randomly choose to believe wrote it:
I think people refuse to admit it because their careers have been so far from writing, and I think it's too bad."

reply

That does not say Kevin Smith wasn't involved. lol

All that says is that Goldman was NOT involved. lol

And yes, Kevin Smith has written some damn good work... and still writes.

reply

The person quoted who did have some involvement did specifically say that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote it.

You have no basis to assume Kevin Smith wrote it aside from apparently liking his movies.
Smith was already a successful screen writer and friends with Ben Affleck so why wouldn't he be credited with co-writing it if he had as much involvement as you state?

reply

Kevin Smith is credited as a PRODUCER smart guy. Producers DO sit in on writing sessions and suggest script changes.

Yes he IS a successful writer. He's also a FRIEND of theirs.. you are trying to tell me someone who has all of these qualifications did NOT get involved in the writing at all?

a. He CO-PRODUCED the film
b. He's a brilliant writer
c. He's a good FRIEND of Damon and Affleck

Come on.. you telling me he did NOTHING regarding this script? lol

His signature's all OVER it.

I didn't just select this guy because I like his films.. he's a CO PRODUCER, he's a WRITER, and he's a FRIEND of theirs for God sakes.

Even Robin Williams improvised some of the finished film.

Read between the lines and stop giving all the credit to those two clowns.

reply

Anyone who refers to Matt & Ben as "Clowns" while referencing the work they did in this film (Whether or not there were some minor changes, IE:Additions, subtractions from their original work.), is in-fact, making a "clown" of themself.

Why is it that people always want to do nothing else but tear other people down? Is that the only way they can feel better about themselves? Their own inadequacies?

What is so wrong with just saying:"Good job guys!" ?

reply

The problem is credit:

There are way too many talented people working behind the scenes here that did not get proper credit for this film: Kevin Smith for example.

My guess is they decided to tout Matt and Ben as the writers in order to better Market the film. It becomes a big discussion in LA if everyone thinks two young guys with next to no writing experience wrote something like this.

It's all just a big marketing scam from what I can see.

Kevin Smith's writing style is all over the script.

reply

Kevin Smith has done numerous one man shows/standup/Q&As. In one of them, he talks about his relationship with Affleck and writing and says “motherfucker, only one of us won an Oscar for writing.” Smith did not write it, he clearly thinks of himself to be not as strong of a writer as they were.

reply

It's hilarious that people refuse to believe that Affleck and Damon wrote this film. Yes, they had a lot of input, yes they were asked to change directions, yes I'm sure they had editors.

But there's no reason other than paranoid armchair theorizing to presume that they didn't.

I mean, hell. A guy like Stallone fucking wrote Rocky.
