Was Ed just playing stupid

The whole movie. Obviously he was a goofy guy, but I feel like he knew exactly what was going on and just played stupid because he wanted Dexter to be his friend. For example, at the end he clearly was intelligent and he knew what Roxanne was doing and he got her good for it. Also, he’s ability to friend crazy people helped them escape.
