What was the significance of the train numbers

Everybodys saying what a great movie this is but it is a hell of story to follow and probably needs a second viewing, you can tell by all the queries on this comments section.
So the importance of the trains passed me by I'm afraid.

During the movie, I think it was mentioned that the killer struck on the 18th of the month (for reasons unknown)? At the final crime scene, a calendar revealed that the last victim was killed on February 18th and the numbers 2 and 18 had been circled by someone - presumably the killer, as a clue to taunt the main good guy.

This lead the good guy to chase after the 218 train when it passed through the town.

That'll do thanks. Getting tired of serial killer films now with usual catch me if you can theme and very oblique clues.

On the back of the picture of the little boy, the killer had written "218" along with a message. The agent guy says he's tried thinking of things that 218 could mean, one of them being February 18th, which was just a day or two away. And then yeah, Glover had circled "February" and "18" on the calendar at the mechanic shop when he killed the guy there.
But then later someone mentions that the 218 train is the last one of the night, and that ended up being the one Glover and Leto were on.
