Was there supposed to be something else from Nicholas' past...?

...that made him the way he was at the beginning of the story?

I know we're lead to believe that he was turning 48, the same age his father was when he committed suicide and that that was something Nicholas was now dealing with, but I couldn't help but feel that there was something else from Nicholas' past that he was haunted by, even scarred by and as has been said elsewhere, the purpose of the game was to help him gain(regain?) perspective on life.

Did anyone else feel this way?

Nobody lives to 48 or older without some emotional baggage but other than his father's suicide, we are told nothing of any other issues.

He was afraid that he might have some of the same "thing", whatever it was, that drove his father to suicide. And he was affraid that his life was becoming too similar to that of his father, he was affraid that he would make the same mistakes.

There was also of course the whole thing with him wanting to/taking on the role of, a father figure for his brother. Something that his brother accepted but sometimes also rejected.
So his relationship with his brother was also damaged and perhaps he felt that the innocent relationship that he had with his brother before his father's death, was now gone.

That is why his brother organized the party with CRS, because he was afraid Nicholas was going down the same road.
