I really like this movie, and I like Shannon D, but seriously? She can't sing and doesn't play the part of a rock singer/lead vocalist very well! Her singing is actually pathetic at times. I can't believe they cast her in this role. They could at least have castsomeone who has a real singing voice. The girl who plays Zan sings way better.

Yeah, because everybody has the balls to get up there and show their true voice. Put her on mute if you don't like her - they both have nice voices, especially since most have to lip sync.

shareI too feel that they mis-cast the part. The acting is par for Shannen, but please, I must agree, her doing the actual singing? Her speaking voice is grating. Bully for her, getting up there to sing, I give her major credit. The part is for an amazing singer that just wows everyone, that is a big stretch here. I really does take away from the movie.
shareI just watched this movie on cable TV and enjoyed it. (OK, Zanne is a scary freak!)
My only comment(s) in regards to the singing is that I felt it was just right, taken in the context of this movie.
What I got out of the film, is that some college friends got together and formed a band. They wrote some songs, performed locally and had tons of fun doing it. Were they decent, and fun to watch? Yes! Were they "perfect"? No.
Remember, they are portraying students attending college for a purpose that may or may not be music. (I can't remember if any of the main actor's majors were mentioned?)
I actually could appreciate the fact that the "band" scenes weren't so perfect.
This is really a stretch here, but to demonstrate my point, it would be like commenting on the boy's garage band scene in the movie Detroit Rock City, saying they should have been a better band.

At the sorority rush, they mentioned that Heather was a music major. And Sammy, he might have been joking, but he said if they win the battle of the bands, he'll miss out on med school. Nick was really into the music so he might have also been a music major, and I always wondered if Simon was actually in school. Because he was at the Sweetheart dance, but he lived off-campus. He could probably be in a fraternity and not live in a frat house, but the only time he's at the school, is when he goes up to Heather after she finds him in bed with Zanne.
But I loved her voice. They're like an indie band. And sometimes they have singers with unconventional voices.
Shannen is a great actress, but her singing sucks.
