I used to think I was one of the few people who liked this.

I thought people looked at this like it was some stupid sci-fi film and they were unable to appreciate it, but I was shocked to find the amount of people who love it. A 7.7 score on IMDb is impressive.

reply

It is the last good film from Besson (so far, but I'm not holding my breath anymore)...

reply

I think he's capable of doing more good films.

reply

I thought Angel-A was excellent - but that was a long time ago now.

reply

I've always liked it. It had some fresh elements to it.

reply

But does it have some fifth elements to it?

reply

lol! just one.

reply

Worked at a movie theatre when this came out, everyone I worked with loved it. Most people I have met since at least like it.

reply

I was 14 when this came out and I thought I only liked it because I was still a kid. Because of the creatures and Chris Tucker, I believed that most people would think it was some stupid sci-fi flick. As I got older, I realized that a lot of people really liked it.

This is a great movie. I didn't see it in theaters, but my Aunt did get me the movie that year for Christmas and I watched it a lot. One of my favorite Bruce Willis movies for sure and of course the lovely Milla Jovovich is wonderful in it

reply

I love it. Really good and creative.

reply

I don't love it unreservedly, I can't love any Bruce Willis film unreservedly, but the film is entertaining and unique.

It's also flawed and uneven, not as flawed and uneven as "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets", but there's still a lot more good than bad.

reply

I can't love any Bruce Willis film unreservedly

Pulp Fiction? The Sixth Sense? Die Hard?

reply

I HATE "Pulp Fiction", and consider all Tarantino movies to be deeply flawed. At best.

I mght like the other two unreservedly, if Bruce Willis weren't in them.

reply

Otter Why do you have such a hang up with Bruce Willis? Why can't you like one of his films unreservedly? Just wondering

reply

Oh honey, *never* demand that people like the same things that you like, it just pisses people off.

Especially if whatever it is that you like has as little merit as the acting of Bruce Willis.

reply

I wasn't demanding you to like anything, I was just asking why you hate Bruce Willis..... it was a simple question.

reply

I don't hate Willis, I just think he's a one-note actor... and I don't like his one note. He always plays the douchey guy who's cheerfully full of himself and whose only redeeming quality is his wisecracking sense of humor, right? In real life, douchey guys like that can be fun for up to 15 minutes, so in a movie, I'm always sick of his stock character before the movie is even half over!

He's one of those actors whose every film would be better, if he'd been replaced by another actor.

reply

Speaking of douchey, have you ever seen Mortal Thoughts?? 😁😁😁😁

reply

I don't think i have.

And if Willis is in it, I don't think I will.

reply

You gotta see it!!!! Just to see what him being a true, genuine douchebag is LOL. It's got Demi Moore Harvey Keitel, and Glenne Headly. And it's based on a true story that happened in the 80s. Bruce does such a good job at being a douche in this movie, that it's an actual joy to watch him do it. Because to tell you the truth, I knew quite a few guys back in the 80s that acted EXACTLY the way he does in this movie. Plus it's just a good movie all around.

reply

Thank you, but I think I've seen enough true-blue douchebags to last me for the next few decades. And not just in the movies.

reply

😞😞😞😞

reply

It's fun. That's all.

There's certainly stupid things, but it has a lot of cool visuals and decent action.

reply

People definitely used to hate this movie. It had a resurgence in popularity some years back. Found a new fanbase and all the sudden the old haters decided it wasn't so bad. This movie used to get lumped together with Hudson Hawk as another Bruce Willis dud.

reply

The score went up on IMDb from a 7.1 to a 7.7. I can only imagine how high it will be in 10 years from now.

reply

Despite being unbelievably sexy, Milla was still relatively unknown back then. And Gary Oldman hadn't quite become celebrated as a brilliant actor yet either. There's a lot to unpack in this movie in hindsight that is perhaps more rewarding than it had to offer when it was new. Also, quirky off beat scifi movies are much more in fashion now.

reply

Based on my mathematical calculations, it's rating should be right around 53.1 in 10 years.

reply

"lumped together with Hudson Hawk"..... never heard of that before.
