When he initially meets Korben, he smokes a cigarette as soon as they go off the air. Later, when they need to start a fire, he claims he quit smoking! Unless he quit during those several hours, he is a dirty liar!!!!

I think he was just exaggerating and being overly dramatic...after every thing they went through (nearly dying multiple times) he could've decided to get his life together lol

That cigarette he smoked very well could've been his last one before he quit. I've quit smoking several times before my final time almost 7 years ago, and each time I always had a "cutoff date" and I would enjoy my "final" smoke before I stopped. That's most likely what Ruby did, too.
