I think Ruby Rhod was actually funny

Everybody seems to hate him, he is always in lists of "the most annoying characters in film history", but I always laugh when I watch his scenes, and that was the point of the character.

Finally someone who agrees! I often skip forward to his first intro scene..was totally hilarious. I think he was stuck in as a parody of the celebrity worshipping culture - despite his ridiculous appearance and behavior, you see the stewardesses waxing orgasmic about him, as does the concierge to Korben when she shows him the wardrobe in his room on Phloston.
It's almost as though Luc Besson predicted the rise of Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.

Seriously? Are you Serious? If there was no Prince, David Bowie, or Janis Joplin, none of these people would exist. What they did was shame the flamboyant celebrities during part of the 90's until part of the 2000s to make the new crop of flamboyant celebrities look fresh and new...

I found him annoying at first when he does his radio show. But when he tags along Korben during the fiasco he was freaking hilarious!!

I love Ruby! Effeminate, yet a ladies man, annoying yet awesome, and can rock an off the shoulder velvet rose bodysuit like nobody's business!

I'm pretty sure they intended for his character to be annoying.

This.

Ruby Rhod wasnt supposed to be just plain funny. He was supposed to be absurd, over the top, annyoing, whacko, riddiculous.

I agree "over the top, annyoing, whacko, riddiculous" AND funny.

Since Besson was partly inspired by the works of Moebius (he even worked on the movie IIRC), a famous graphic novel/comics drawer, I'm sure Ruby Rhod was partly inspired by a very similar character (except he was white) named Diavaloo (this character was not exactly pleasant - and even if Ruby Rod was more positive and fun, it's obvious he has many characteritics borrowed from him) in "l'Incal" a series of best seller comics from the 80s/90s in France, by Moebius (and Jodorowsky).
