Original Ending?

Does anyone know what the original ending of Fierce Creatures was? (Apparently it didn't test well and was re-shot). Thanks!

From the "alternate versions" page:

The entire ending of "Fierce Creatures" was reshot after test showings. The original featured the elder McCain [Kevin Kline] being killed by a rhino and some business with a tiger costume.

That's the only thing I know about it... haven't seen it myself... would like to, though.

thanks!...is the "alternatve versions" page something in imdb?

reply

Yes. When you're on the main page for a film, look at the left panel. It's at the middle of the panel, give or take.

I just watched the DVD and noticed in the trailer someone gets gored by a rhyno, and that doesn't appear in the film. Didn't look terribly fatal, more like a groin-shot joke, but nevertheless it's there.

Here is the original ending:
After Rollo and Willa discover that Vince has embezzled money from Octopus, Vince meets an untimely demise at the end of a charging rhinoceros' horn. The zookeepers, now having befriended Rollo, think he is the one who has killed Vince and hide the corpse by feeding it to the lions and tigers.

As Rollo secretly yearns for the lovely Willa, Rod makes a surprise visit to the zoo to inform them it is going to be sold and made into a golf course. Willa and the others offer to raise the money and buy the zoo for themselves but Rod will have no part of it. They overpower him and lock him into a tiger's cage, hoping to encourage him to agree to sell the zoo to them. Rod backs down and agrees and signs, then learns the tiger was actually Bugsy and another zookeeper in an elaborate tiger costume.

Rod won't be made a fool of and overcomes Willa, stealing the signed document and nullifying the deal. But Rod has wandered into the rhinoceros compound like his son Vince and meets the same fate. The zookeepers get the zoo, Rollo gets Willa and all is right with the world.

Oh boy, that sounds absolutely horrible. I'm glad they changed it.

reply

That does sound terrible... the tiger thing reminds me of Monty Python's Meaning of Life, which also includes Michael Palin in an elaborate tiger suit. Wonder if John Cleese was running out of ideas...

As bad as that other ending sounded, it would be worth seeing one day. But, there's no chance Universal will release a SE DVD of this!! :P

Is this the reason Carey Lowell disappears for the end of the film? I bet she wasn't available for the reshoot.

The last we see of her is when all the characters start wearing animal costumes. She's very sexy in her's. Then, that's it. She isn't in any of the scenes after that.

That stood out with me. I guess because I was hoping she would strip down again. :)

I think Carey Lowell was working on Law and Order at the same time as the reshoot so therefore that is why her character does not appear.

Bumping this 11 years later for the justified reason that the original test version had now leaked online. I made a post with instructions on how to find it.
