Ending (Spoiler...obviously)

Just looking to see if there is a general consensus out there. Do people like the ending the way it is with the evil twist?

Or would people rather have seen it end up with Azazel dying in the woods along side Hobbs?

Personally, I'm very torn. Sometimes it really stings to see Zel lose. I love his character in the movie and it would have been a great way for him to go out. The other side of me applauds the balls it takes to have the bad guy win at the end. I also love Denzel's narration, as Azazel, at the end when he is talking about losing and then when the cat appears he gives that evil little, "Aha," and says "remember I said I was going to tell you about the time I almost died." Its evil, its creepy, its disheartening but it makes Azazel a character you absolutely love to hate. Which, unfortunately I think, is rarely pulled off with bad guys in movies.

So I was just wondering how some other people felt about the ending. Thanks, enjoy the film.

Good question - I was torn also and definitely surprised - I thought Azazel was gone fo sho . I like the idea for a sequel...kind of like a Rocky II. BTW, I just saw Fallen two days ago and I thought the Reese character was amazing. Then, today I saw the preview for DiCaprio's new movie (Shutter Island) and there is a quick shot of this grotesque man....and I think it's the same guy who played Reese. Good call Scorcese (Interestingly enough, Nick Kazan directed Fallen and Scorcese is an Elia Kazan fan...)

I hate the ending... but I love the ending. The last half hour is just such a downer.

No, not really. The original "Rocky" has a perfectly happy ending. Fallen kicks the audience in the gut. Not to go there but I think Rocky II. took away a lot of the impact of what made that ending to the first so great. Rocky wasn't suppose to win, his goal was to go the distance.

LOL at the idea of a sequel.

Don't you get the movie, evil will always exist. Act accordingly.

AZAZEL DID LOSE... DIDN'T YOU SEE THE LAST SCENE WHERE HE BECOMES A BIG PUSSY!

A sequel, especially one where he finally kicks it, would be great. Like the sequel can be based another 15 years after Denzel’s end.

At first I thought it was cheap that Azazel got to escape through the cat...but then as I saw the movie again and thought about it, I think it's cool. Azazel had been around for THOUSANDS of years...what were the chances that he(it?) was really gonna go down..It had been around for hundreds of years right. not to say that that took away from the nobility of Denzel Washington's character for sacrificing himself.

I thought the ending was pretty satisfying.

"not to say that that took away from the nobility of Denzel Washington's character for sacrificing himself."

Yes it did. He achieved nothing by doing it. He would have been better off going on the run with his nephew.

reply

Nah. The demon would just have hunted him down. Yeah, it would have taken a while, but it's not like he didn't have, er, time on his side.

It's the reason I love this movie. So, yeah, I like the twist.

I loved the twist and ending, then hated it at the same time because Hobbes loses. But I do love Azazel starts to lose it and get really scared when he learns of the poison.

But I do love Azazel starts to lose it and get really scared when he learns of the poison.

Why would he be scared if he knew he could enter animals? Seems like it would be more fun to tell mr. poison smoker that he can enter any animal in the woods, so his whole plan was a waste of time.

The thing I don't get is that it seemed like Denzel's character was going to let his friend slowly bleed to death so he could drive far enough away. The demon would die since there would be no other host (as far as Denzel's character knew). What's the point of smoking poisoned cigarettes when he could have gotten away?

He may have been scared because it was winter. A lot of animals hibernate in winter and it wasn't certain or 100% guaranteed he would make it into the woods in time to find one. Also if he did encounter any animals they would be scared off at the sight of a man running at them so they are probably harder to "catch" than humans. Also in a lot of horror movies about immortal beings, the immortals are the ones that are the most afraid of death.

You know this is old but here is my take on it.He had passed from humans to human for so long and he didnt think it would be any animals near enough to the cabin... or maybe... once he possessed animals.... then he was bound to just possess animals..

Total John carpenter ending..........

I like the way this ending leaves the fate of the other characters uncertain. Will Azazel get back to Greta and Hobbes' nephew? Azazel has no way of knowing exactly where they are, but he has all the time in the world to find them.

reply

Don't know if this has been said before, but I thought that it would have been a better ending to see this powerful age old demon get tricked by Hobbs into thinking the cig was actually poisoned. Azazel leaves the one body and doesn't even try Hobbs, thinking he's dead already. There's no cat or anybody else around, so Azazel then dies in some cool supernatural demonic way and then Hobbs opens his eyes and smiles. A powerful demon who's hundreds or thousandsof years old(can't remember) getting tricked by one of God's children would be a neat trick!

Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up!

I thought Hobbs was more intelligent then that. If he really wanted to commit suicide he could have waited for the demon to die. Then he can go kill himself. I like the idea of letting the bad guy win for a change but I wish it had been done in a slightly more intelligent manner. I felt it was such a let down for Hobbs character. Still a cool movie though.

Well, if he waited for the demon to die before he killed himself in some way, Azazel may have been able to possess him and prevent him from killing himself. That's why he started smoking the poison cigarette before Jonesy could die.

I had a feeling it was going to end the way it did, because I noticed Azazel possess an orange cat in one of those jumping from host to host by touching scenes. (The cat rubs up against a guy sitting on some steps) so I had a feeling that Azazel would jump into an animal's body out in the forest.

When he first got to the cabin, I thought Hobbs was going to try and outrun Azazel, that way, when Jonesy died, Azazel would try and go after Hobbs, and just not be able to make it to his body in time. With Hobbs killing himself, it gave Azazel the opportunity to look for other options in the form of wild animals, where he might have just went in the direction that Hobbs ran. But he just didn't know that Azazel could possess animals as well, so that wasn't a concern for him.

This was a great movie but the bad guy always lives now. I suppose when Fallen was made it wasn't as common.

reply

lol there is a sequel and SPOILER !!!!!!!! Azazel does die in it !!!!!!!

It came out on May 2007 and is called All Hell Breaks Loose.

Let me know what you guys think of it. Azazel is a tricky one but he does eventually die.

(Unrelated spoiler) I absolutely loved it. That ending may be the best part of the movie. We see the good guy win so many times it almost seems unrealistic. Things don't always work out in the end, and filmmakers shouldn't be afraid to reflect that more often. I guess they may feel that audiences can't handle that. Think about if Rambo: First Blood ended the way the book did, he outright kills 17 people then at the end takes the gun back from the colonel and offs himself. That's pretty bleak and many people wouldn't have liked it, but I feel that's a stronger ending and would leave a stronger impression. Another side note, I absolutely loved No Country For Old Men.

I thought this film ended perfectly.

A sequel would be an abomination.
