Damon Albarn

So I heard that Damon's in this film and he plays a character called Jason. Is he in it for long, or is it a small cameo?

reply

He's in there for a good long time. At least the first fourty minutes, so if you want to see it just for the Damon-ness (which is what I did :P) then I'd reccommend it. Crap movie otherwise, tho.

reply

NO WAY!!! I refuse to accept that this film is crap!! Yeah it's a bit cliched but the acting is fantastic (even by Albarn - who is actually a drama school graduate) not to mention the soundtrack. At least this film has a genuine sub-plot. Robert Carlysle's character is struggling with his loss of ideals as a disillusioned socialist. He then realises that by turning his back on that, he is inadvertantly turning his back on love, life and everything important...see, there is a moral in there for good measure! He rejects the evil money that consumes everyone in the film...then finds clarity at the end! Again, this is a very anti-capitalist ending i.e. money, greed...they lead to unhappiness (In this case death).

It's a brilliant film. Consider yourself well and truly reprimanded ScuttlesB. Yes...I am a socialist, maybe that's why I love it. Furthermore, it's got Ray Winstone in it...I played a celeb football match against him at West Ham and he kicked me about all over the pitch...what an honour!

Well, I'm tempted. I have to admit that seeing Albarn act is the biggest pull, but you've stated a good case about the film itself. Hmm. I wish it was available to rent - it would stink to fork out £20 only for it to be rubbish.

reply

£20?

Dude, this great film is avalible for only £5.97 at Amazon.

I own this film, and I thought it was well worth the money.

reply

And if you can't find it on Amazon then go to play .com (www.play.com) cos they've got it, I know cos I just bought it on DVD for £6.99 or thereabouts, even though I've already got it on video and seen it a million times - it's fantastic!

I actually sought it out in 97/98 because I'm Blur mad and wanted to see what Damon's acting was like (my ex-girlfriend used to say I look like Damon and thought I was a tad obsessed actually...) but I'm glad I did cos Damon or no Damon (he doesn't play a huuuugggeee part in it anyway) it's one hell of a film!

Buy it! Don't just sit there, GO OUT AND BUY IT!

Jay ;)

By the way Lena Heady (Connie) is a goddess in every form of the word... even more stunning in "The Actors." That's a fairly funny film, anyone seen it?

Views on good ol' Lena?

reply

£5 in HMV. This film isn't crap, I've seen worse and I've seen better. For me, the soundtrack is garbage but I liked the robbery and the hunt for the money, and the police station part is far-fetched but good.

reply

Scuttles is a nonce.

reply

who is Scuttles?

Albarn was abysmal - even worse than his new band with Joe Strummer's cast-offs.

reply

He was great in it, even though he only had a small part.

I thin he should o more acting

reply

I have it in my hand now. I wish I know how to take a picture as its a brilliant movie 8/10

saw last night, feel asleep. Didnt rate albarn performance (unless he was trying to portray a wanabe gangster) or the movie

I've always liked this film. It's not a masterpiece by any stretch but at the time especially was a decent flick.

I dont see the point in saying Damon was poor or whatever, as he's just playing the part of a young lad and at no point is expected to be a legendary performance or anything. It's nice to see him in something, and he just plays the small part aswell as you could hope for.

As for the film, I had it on tape and have too recently got it on DVD from Amazon for about a fiver including postage, just for the sake of having it in the collection. Us Brits are all fans of Hollywood blockbusters, but sometimes it's nice to sit and watch a bleak London based gangster film on a bleak London afternoon, we can relate to these types in a way where a reasonable story is enough without looking for Oscar winning performances and intricate plots all the time.

Robert Carlyle's character isn't great, but as Begby in Trainspotting is the only time I have ever watched him and felt totally comfortable with him as an actor in film.
Ray Winstone does what he does, and if you like him, then you cant complain.
The rest of the cast are also mostly decent British TV actors, who are happily in their depth playing these roles in a film.

I have to say I have never liked the police station scene, as it's too far fetched and just feels out of place in reality and within the film itself.

Nevertheless if you are from England and particuarly London or the south in general, then most will feel this is a decent enough film, and worth watching.

But dont expect it to be Lock Stock or Snatch, it doesn't try too hard to be clever, and is just another film.

But in this category it is a good film.

Although this isn't the best film ever made, it is definitely better than most british gangster films of late.

In my opinion the lead performances are uniformly excellent, especially Ray Winstone and Phil Davis as Julie. The script is above average with occasional touches of effective black humour and twists (for the most part) that you don't see coming. Damon Albarn is good in his role as well, playing a wannabe gangster. Also the final shootout in the police station is an amazingly tense climax. Overall i think that this film is better than Lock Stock, but nowhere near as good as classic Brit Gangster films like Get Carter. Definitely worth a watch
