Plot hole: Why didn't Smith disarm the bomb?

Just seen the movie and noticed a gigantic plot hole (almost as big as the black hole to hell): When Smith finds the boom and activate the screen. He just looks at the countdown and does nothing. But if you pause, you'll clearly see that the screen displays a "disarm" button. Why don't he just press it? Five seconds isn't long, but it's long enough to press a button right in front of you. And then they could all have escaped safely.

Watched it last night and noticed that too.

Smith seems to be on the edge of falling apart and visibly crumbles when he sees that the timer is on 5 seconds. It's entirely possible that he never noticed the disarm button in his stressed out state. I mean, I've seen the movie 7 or 8 times and only noticed on that last viewing, he got one chance!

Why quote other people when I like the sound of my own voice?

reply

Wow. I've watched this film many times and have never noticed that-I'll look out for it as it's on telly right now.
Just got to the "This place is a tomb" bit!

Viva?

At first, I thought that too...why didn't he just disarm it?

But on second look, I think there was a code that needed to be entered before it could be disarmed.
Code entered, then press Disarm.

You may not have noticed it before if you've watched it a lot before DVDs and blueray versions came out, because it isn't clearly visible until you see and pause it in high definition. It isn't really a button either, it is a menu on the screen, no buttons underneath them. I suppose it could of been a touch screen, but not sure it matters, he was defeated when he seen how much time was left on it. Not that big of a plot hole even if so, it'd be changing the plot, its like saying why didn't they just turn around and go and the rest of the movie was Smithy getting it on with a Martian woman.

Not to mention theres like 5 seconds left on the timer. So You open the hatch see that there is only 5 seconds left and shock/panic sets in almost immediately, and you just have no time to react in that situation.

Furthermore, even if he did try to disarm the bomb, then it would have most likely required a password or access code. With that in mind, Smith just thought: "Oh, what the heck." and accepted his fate. The irony is that he's probably better off than the survivors.

I'd definitely prefer being blown up than being tortured to death by some weird, demon thing.

Well as a viewer you have the luxury of being able to pause the movie and notice these details...

I just assumed he knew the bomb would take more than 5 seconds to disarm; that it wasn't as simple as pushing the button by itself.

This won't answer your question because the other posters did that well enough.

I just love the way that scene was acted. His face is so sad when he sees the bomb and the timer going. It's a very quietly acted despair.

reply

Ditto. It breaks my heart because I love Smithy- & he's the only one who openly loathes the ship from the start!

reply

Typically, you'd need a code for that.

I've seen the movie at least ten times and have never noticed a disarm button. I'm okay that given five seconds to stare at it that he didn't either so I liked that scene with the way he closed his eyes and accepted his fate.

I'm no bomb expert, but logic dictates that a bomb would require a code to be armed ... And no code to be disarmed cause, well, if someone goes insane and arms the bomb, you want everyone to be able to fix the issue and save the ship.

I guess it's really more of a question of time... It probably takes more than five seconds to navigate the menus, the "are you sure" prompts and all that...
