I hated Diahann Carol's character!

Elzora was the most cruel, hateful bitch ever onscreen.
Everything she did was beyond inhuman.
She was truly nasty and truly ill-tempered.
I wanted to reach out and throttle her onscreen when she told Mozelle she would be alone forever.
Telling that to a widow! Beyond evil and shows a lack of compassion.

I hated the character of Elzora and wished the movie would have had her recieve a fitting punishment for all the pain she caused.
She was the one who killed Eve's father, not Eve!

Well for starters it wouldn't be much of a movie without that character. Would be some stupic Halmark surgary rubbish. You were suppose to despise the character. I guess Ms. Carroll did her job!

After watching the movie, I don't believe Elzora actually did anything with the hair & told the girl to return later to see if she was serious about going forward witht he curse. When Eve returned, Elzora lied to her & told her the voodoo curse was already performed, just to see the girl's reaction. (Eve obviously did not want her father dead & Elzora made her realize that). She was trying to teach the girl a lesson. Still, Elzora should have told the girl she didn't actually perform the curse.

I think it was Louis (Eve's father) that is ultimately responsible for his own death. You can't screw someone's wife, & then when he confronts you, you mock him (he followed the guy outside to rub his nose in the infidelity). Louis was poking a hornet's nest. He did it to himself.

Just as Louis's sister was partly to blaim for at least one of her husband's deaths via infidelity, it was only a matter of time before the same happened to Louis. With the sister, who knows if she was actually cursed or if it was just a self-fullfilling prophesy. If you expect something to happen, it probably will, especially if you take steps to make it happen (consciously or not).

Not saying he deserved to get killed of course, but he reaped what he sowed- destruction within his own family & in others. He was a healer by profession, but a destroyer in his personal relationships.

These characters were well written.

You could also say that Eve was partly responsible for her own father's death, not b/c of the voodoo, but b/c she told Mr.Mozell about his wife's infidelity.

^^Agreed.

That cracked me up. Ms. Carole played her character very well.

She was a great character although I've seen far worse when it comes to being evil.

"You could also say that Eve was partly responsible for her own father's death, not b/c of the voodoo, but b/c she told Mr.Mozell about his wife's infidelity."

She was partly responsible for Mr. Mereaux finding out about the affair (although I wonder why he hadn't figured it out sooner and on his own since everybody else in the area knew), but all responsibility falls on Louis for his death. Mr. Mereaux told him never to speak to Matty again and he did it anyway.

Don't eva let nobody tell you you ain't strong enough

Wow! You brought on a whole new perspective. I didn't even think about it this way

Diahann carol usually does such bougie roles. elzora was refreshing. she cracked me up with some of her snide remarks, something on the lines of- too bad eve didn't want mozelle dead-, & calling her -the little pineapple thief. lol
her best role since cludine.

far as the curse, she didn't like that family for whatever reason, & $20. I'm pretty sure she did perform that curse. I tried to explain it away myself, when I 1st saw it. but the series of events too much of a coinicidence.

good feedback on this thread btw.

Part of the reason she was there was to remain the neutral balance.
Louis' death was from his own doing. Elzora mainly just wanted to teach the little girl a reason and how you have to be careful what you wish for because in the end it could be exactly the opposite.
